Annual Open 31st October 2010
Our Annual Open held at Kelling this year saw a good turnout of 35 anglers including 18 club members, considering two other events were being held in the region this was very good.
Conditions were calm with little wind and sunshine for most of the match with the light rain arriving in the last hour or so.
The fishing itself was poor with the whiting only showing in small numbers and the majority of fish being dabs and flounders many of which were in poor condition, crab activity also played a part with baits lasting no more than 15 minutes a cast.
As usual the sections were placed at either end of the cliffs missing out the majority of the radar station. The results show clearly how close the competition was, but it was Skegness angler Jim Robinson on peg 32 who took top honours, finishing with 14 fish for 3lb 4 1/3oz.Just behind him was Clyde Leggett with 15 fish for 3lb 2 1/3oz and only 2oz separating them. 3rd place went to Keith Morley with amazingly 24 fish but only weighing in at 2lb 10oz, final podium spot went to Wayne Perring with 15 fish 2lb 6 1/3oz.
Section winners on the day were Paul Thorburn in zone B with 8 fish for 2lb 2oz and a cracking flounder of 32cm caught on a float fished piece of mackerel. Zone B runner up was Tony Thomas with 13 fish for 1lb 15oz.
Zone A winner was Gary Hutson with 14 fish for 2lb 5oz and close behind him was Spencer Waldren also with 14 fish for 2lb 1 2/3oz.
Heaviest Flat went to Paul Thorburn and the Heaviest Round went to Bob Forster with a bass just under 1lb.
Everyone managed a few fish but with no consistency to the catches many found it hard to get into any sort of rhythm, let’s hope the whiting turn up in numbers over the next two weeks to give us all a bit more sport.
