Bacton 13th March 2011 & North Norfolk Sea League Round 6

The 10th and final round of the Winter Accumulator was held at Bacton with the club also combining with the Skeggie Boys to fish the 6th and final round of the SAMF North Norfolk National Sea League.  As usual HQ for the match was Castaways Holiday Park and many thanks to Anna & Richard for allowing us to use their facilities.  With a small tide it was a late start (12:00) to ensure we all got in front of the revetments.  Pegging was West in front of the Gas Site with the sections positioned close to the 3 main pipes to try and maximise our catch.

During pegging the weather fluctuated between sunshine and mist but message from Peterborough indicated that we were in for some heavy stuff later.  A light southerly gave us the perfect wind for Bacton with a flat sea but with a surprisingly big swell and plenty of colour.  With a slow ebbing tide this gave us the perfect conditions for a profitable match although small tides don’t tend to bring a lot of fish in shore.  Fishing all 3 pipes meant a long haul for those near  the 3rd pipe but everyone was more than ready for the off although a late start had given all ample time to prepare.

The first couple of casts tend to give an indication on how the match was to pan out, either there was plenty of fish there or it was going to be a struggle.  With bait coming in untouched we all soon realised that it was going to be the latter.  With the sections well spread out it was always going to be difficult to determine what was coming in but it was soon apparent ,not a lot with buckets remaining stationary.  Mike “last cast” Watts near pipe 3 was first to record with a 27cm flounder followed shortly afterwards by a rockling with Paul “scoop” Fenech keeping in touch with a small whiting and rockling.  Back along the stretch it was heard that around the 1st pipe Paul “class act” Thornburn and Peter “sandy coke” Loke  were into a small codlett each and likewise John “steady” Carter.

However, it was Ivan “double shot” Allen who was doing the business on the 2nd pipe with a small bass, whiting and codlett although losing gear on the pipe was not going down too well with him.  As the tide ebbed so did the fish apart from the miniature whiting which did not count in this match. Then, as predicted with 2 hours to go, the nasty stuff arrived.  Not particularly heavy, just a nuisance and fine and with the wind swinging more westerly driving straight into everyone’s buddies.  With rod stands slowly making their way seaward on a flat Bacton beach all of this was not really comfortable for the majority but that’s fishing for you.

With the last hour approaching the tide started to pick up and the odd fish began to show.  Back near the 1st pipe that old gentlemen Dick “umbrella man” Able thought he was in with a shout with a 26cm codling. Whilst near the 3rd pipe Tony “yoda” Thomas suddenly found his line going down tide resulting in a 35cm codling on the beach.   Promoting “yoda” from last to first in the section and maybe a winning fish but Paul “scoop” Fenech was having none of this.   From hot spot peg 1 he was able to target the grounds just to the right of the 3rd pipe a favourite bar  for big flounders when a couple of casts later his rod bounced and slackened.  A codling for sure he thought but wrong when a 32cm was in his bucket and 40 points on his match card.  With the tide approaching bottom the fish at last woke up at this pipe as “scoop” went on to add another 2 fish to his apparent match winning card.  All of this left poor old “last cast” Watts on peg 2 rather out in the cold (and wet) after such a bright start.

With the rain easing slightly it was a long trudge back to HQ with at least the wind on our backs.  A special thank you, at this stage to the local parish council from Dene “smooth” Conway for their strategicly placed seats near the top of Gas Site slope, he really does want to give up smoking for good.  Anyway,  it was not until we were all back at HQ that it was not “scoop” who had won the day but Joc “quality baits” Goudie who had managed to entice a plump 2lb 5oz codling out of another hot spot to the right of the 2nd pipe to add to his solitary 20cm dab.  As well as the match, it will also give him the club’s cod cup as best codling of the season much to the disappointment of “inspector” Morse who had put his name on that cup at the last 2 matches.  Second on the day was Paul “scoop” Fenech whose match tactics in the end paid off with 2lb 0 1/3oz from 7 fish followed by Tony “yoda” Thomas with 1lb 3 1/3oz from 3 fish.  A disappointing match fish wise but very competitive and one that demonstrates what a bonus fish can do.

As for the Teams,  on the day North Norfolk Lads took some satisfaction after poor performances of late to take the honours with just  5 points from 3 section wins and two 2nds followed by Holt Blues with 7 points from 2 section wins, a 2nd, a 3rd and a blank.  Holt Reds were 3rd  with 10 points from a section win, a 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th and one no show  followed by Skeggie Boys who had a bad day with 18 points from 2 3rds, a 4th and 2 blanks.

For the final placings over the 6 rounds, Holt Blues were crowned league champions with 45 points,  2nd was North Norfolk Lads with 56 points and 3rd was Skeggie Boys with 80 points.  Also on 80 points was Holt Reds but they took 4th place because of a higher dropped score total.  These teams were then followed by North Beach Buddies on 174 points, The Individuals on 182 points and Holt Greens on 183 points.  Dereham A and Dereham B did not show in any of the matches so are excluded from the final teams list.

The top teams will go forward to represent the North Norfolk Sea League in the National Sea League Final in Eastbourne over the weekend of 29th/30th October 2011.
