Bacton 18th June 2011 – 9th Round Summer Accumulator

Bacton 18th June 2011 – 9th Round Summer Accumulator

With a switch from Kelling to Bacton to compensate for the recent lost match at Bacton, a rather depleted turnout met at the Castaways Holiday Park.  Many thanks from the club to Anna and Richard for allowing us to use their facilities.  A big ebbing  tide with plenty of colour in the water   gave the right conditions for those Bacton flounders and maybe the chance of a bass or two.  A breezy South Westerly bringing in some sharp showers meant for most it was to be a beach buddy day except for trolley man “yoda” who decided to do it Irish style.  With a small number it was decided to peg around the first pipe which proved to be a correct decision.

With a big tide all had to set up behind the revetments but with the beach built up quite considerably this presented no problem as the tide ebbed.  As usual all were eager to get started and first cast was going to determine whether the dreaded weed was still around.  All appeared well at the start with none of that green marsh weed but as soon as the tide started to run that stringy red weed and decomposing muddy May weed had replaced it.  We were soon into a light shower or two just to demonstrate that the weather was still there.  With the tide ebbing trolley man was soon over the revetments with the beach buddies quickly following suit.

With everyone now in attack mode the fish were reluctant to show with the weed, particularly the old May weed being  a real pain.  To combat this everyone decided to bring a second rod into action except “gentleman” Able who decided to stick it out with his single rod. All were getting despondent with lack of fish when “gentleman” on peg 1 brought in a real Bacton flounder  a healthy 33cm version and 44 points (14 1/3oz) on his card.  This was soon followed by two small dabs and another decent flounder of 32cm leaving “yoda” on next peg a supposedly hot spot next to the pipe wondering how he was going to compete against this master.

At the other end on the other side of the pipe, things were even more dire with the weed taking its toll on “class act” and “motorway maintenance” who were on the verge of calling it a day.  That was until “silverfox” brought in a couple of reasonable flounders which prompted them to change tactics particularly “motorway maintenance”.  Replicating his traces, bait and distance he was soon into 3 small dabs and the game was on again for him.  “class act” preferred to continue targeting his favourite fish, bass and was soon rewarded with one just in size.

At the other end “yoda” was having a torrid day only managing to find a couple of schoolies.  With “gentleman” bringing in yet another flattie “yoda” decided to strike out the old trusty booms and soon had a 30cm on his card but rather too late in the match.  With a late lunch appointment promise “silverfox” had to call it a day an hour from the end and with 5 flounders on his card he was well in contention.  With the others on his side of the pipe now finding the fish it was soon apparent that his score would eventually be overhauled. However, it was “gentlemen” who was showing everyone the way and to rub salt into “yoda” ‘s rapidly deteriorating  moral landed a 35cm flounder on his last cast.

Dick “gentleman” Able easily secured top spot with 4lb 5 2/3oz from 8 fish which included that specimen flounder.  Next and some way behind was Dene “motorway maintenance” with 2lb 10oz from 7 fish leaving Paul “class act” Thorburn  one ounce behind on 2lb 9oz from just 3 fish.  The big loser on the day was John “silverfox” Neave who was on 2lb 7 1/3oz when he had to leave with an hour of good fishing left.  He was still gutted about this even a week later, a true competitor!  Heaviest flat on the day was Dick’s 35cm flounder and heaviest round Paul’s 36cm bass.

Excitement of the day was the triangular shaped black object sitting motionless just off the pipe outflow.  “yoda” thought it was a basking seal on its back or a cormorant but “motorway maintenance” and “class act” with his binoculars were convinced it was a shark’s fin.  “gentlemen” was too busy catching fish to see anything and when the shape moved off and disappeared all were left contemplating, what if! That would have certainly challenged the conversion chart.   Anyway, apart from the weed quite a reasonable days fishing with Bacton at last coming back to some form.

With a 5.2m tide it has been decided that Cley “new cut” will be just too wet and dangerous for us to venture there for our next match.  The beach at Cley has still got acres of green marsh weed and no real fish so after the relative success of this match we have moved the last Summer Accumulator match on Sunday 3rd July to Bacton fishing 11:00 to 4:00 meeting as usual at Castaways.  For any queries about the match please use the club’s mobile number.
