Big tides made it not practical to fish Cley Cut and with the green marsh weed still inundating Cley beach it was decided to go back to Bacton where the last match produced some specimen flounders on a similar tide. Meeting up as usual at Castaways we were greeted by a perfect bass sea. A nice 4-5 feet swell giving some gentle surf, plenty of colour in a light North Easterly. With a good turnout it was decided to peg evenly either side of the first pipe similar to the good session 2 weeks earlier. It had been a very big high tide and even 2 ½ hours after HW everyone except “class act” and “trolley man” had to set up behind the revetments. “Gentlemen” commented that we were starting too early, it should have been 1:00 instead of 11:00 as that is when the fish came on last time, you never learn was the message. Was he to be proven right?
At the off it was soon clear that the red stringy weed was still here but no green marsh weed and thankfully none of that muddy decomposing May weed. With the surf and inshore gully full of this red stuff it was impossible to prevent it building up on your line. First few casts saw lines being taken to the right in the tide and everyone struggling to retrieve and remove the horrible stuff but no fish with “yoda” having only a sniff of a schoolie bite. As the match progressed everyone was fighting the weed bringing in yards of it at a time but thankfully for once it was easy to remove. The left side of the pipe and low number pegs were suffering most with the high number pegs at “steady” and “cuddly” Carter’s end having an easier time but still no fish.
As we past half way the weed started to ease and reports came in that “scoop” had had a flounder and a good sizeable bass along with “gentlemen” who had a plump Bacton Flounder. The schoolies also started to appear with “yoda” into half a dozen in the 30 to 33 cm range but no sizeable fish. With the tide and weed easing bait placement was crucial, too far and you were on the sand bank so the inshore gully was the place to target. “the hat” soon found them at his range and had 5 respectable flounders on his card within a matter of minutes although his sparring partner, “silverfox”, was really struggling only finding schoolies which seemed to get smaller as the match progressed. “inspector” was not too happy with all the weed but soon perked up when he found a couple of nice flounders amongst the schoolies.
Also struggling was “motorway maintenance”, “sandy coke” and “steady” who could only find the single fish. As for “red stuff”, young Henry it was just not his day his mojo had really deserted him and poor old “cuddly” was not able to show her feminine prowess with a blank card. It was a similar story at the other end with the bottom 3 pegs unable to find a sizeable fish, that is until “class act” carefully place his last cast into the ever decreasing inshore gully and landed a double of nice flounders to apologetically save his blank.
In the end, it was the placement of bait that won the day with Paul “scoop” Fenech taking the honours with 3lb 14oz from 3 fish which included 2 sizeable bass although young Henry said he was fishing in Holland rather than Norfolk. Next was the inshore specialist Sam “the hat” Attew whose normal tactics paid off with 2lb 6 2/3oz from 5 fish. Final podium slot went to Dick “gentlemen” Able who proved he could find fish where others couldn’t with 1lb 15oz from 3 fish. Heaviest round went to Paul with his 2lb 2/3oz bass which gave him a typical adrenaline rushing bass bite with the heaviest flat going to Sam with a 1lb 1 1/3oz flounder.
Although some quality fish were caught, it was not particularly a good match for most, spoilt mainly by that horrible weed for the majority of the match. At the outset Dick was questioning the early start and this match proved that he was right. We should have fished more of the bottom and caught the first stages of the flood, certainly good experience we need to put in the archive. This was the last Summer Accumulator match and although he was not fishing this one it looks like Mike Watts has provisionally taken the Summer Accumulator Trophy, well done Mike!!!
Next match is the “Mackeral Bash” at Kelling on the evening of Friday 15th July from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. Notification of the next committee meeting will be out in due course to determine the start of the Winter fixtures.
