A switch to Saturday to try and tempt a few more members resulted in just “moto maint” taking up the offer in his challenge of a hat trick of matches in 2 days and hopefully a hat trick of wins. The much depleted turnout met at the Castaways Holiday Park for an early 8:30 a.m. start to catch the best of the ebb and start of the flood. A perfect day for Bacton with a light southerly with not a hint of rain but couple this bright sunshine with a small tide and we all knew it was going to be a struggle.
Pegging our usual stretch either side of the first pipe we all set off in optimistic mood including “moto maint” complete with new trolley, bad back!!! From a distance it looked like there was some weed on the edge but when we got there there was carpets of the red stuff around the shore end of the pipe. Doom and despondency set in but the first cast would determine how far out it extended and everyone soon got into their stride at the whistle. “silver fox” was first to retrieve and sigh of relief went across his face as the weed was not as bad as expected. Plenty of it but easy to get off and only became a nuisance if you let your line drop in it. Unfortunately, to add to this the vermin were as active as ever, stripping bait in minutes.
After all the woes “moto maint” was seen getting his card marked. In fact he had a double shot of excellent flounders (33cm and 28cm) on his second cast. Shortly after this “yoda” managed to pick up a 27cm flounder using some drifting tactics to try and combat the weed. It was a struggle for all as the weed kept piling up, not a problem just a nuisance.
As the bottom of the tide came “silverfox” was using all tactics in his armoury but just could not find a fish. Meanwhile “no hat” managed to find a couple of good flounders to get on the scorecard. At the other end “yoda” was just after 27cm specimens finding a slinky 27cm whiting and as the tide started to flood a 27cm dab.
With no further action towards the end it was Dene “moto maint” Conway who took the honours with just the 2 flounders he got on his second cast giving him 1lb 6 2/3oz. Sam “no hat” Attew taking runners-up spot with 1lb 3oz from 2 fish beating Tony “yoda” Thomas by 1 point with 1lb 2 2/3oz from 3 fish.
A pleasant match apart from the weed and lack of fish numbers. It was said that they were there the previous week on the bigger tides but they werealways there yesterday. With another poor turnout we will be trying to juggle the fixtures to prevent further Open clashes. Any changes will be reported on the website and also on the club’s phone. Always listen to the club’s phone message to confirm date and venue for next match. Next match is planned for Sunday 2nd October at Salthouse fishing 9:00 – 2:00.
