We all knew it was match day and Sunday again as the heavens opened and the wind switched to North West fresh to strong, we really must have upset the weather gods. With an ebbing tide at Bacton we took on board “umbrella man” Able’s advice of the past to fish over the bottom at Bacton instead of the full ebb hence our early afternoon, 2:00 p.m. start. With a freshening north westerly it all looked rather uncomfortable on the beach in front of the Gas site our usual match stretch. A reconnoitre to the east and a quick vote saw a change of plan and we were soon in convoy from Castaways to the rough road above the beach to the east of the Holiday Park giving us just a little shelter.
Young Henry soon had the pegs out keeping them all nice and tight although the high end peg on the slip had to be out on its own, well done Henry! The trolley convoy from the Dereham connection was soon making the short walk to the beach although “dickleburgh man” Camilleri had problems negotiating the steps. With a fast ebbing tide the beach here was less vast than to the west so a single set up close to the water was all that was required. With just a 2 to 3 foot swell there was no white water although the gully inside the distant bank was well pronounced.
At the whistle all opted to cast just inside the gully from the bank although the wind restricted “no name yet” Ellis (peg 9) to short casts due to the proximity of the groyne. For the first few casts it was very quiet although “captain” Ellis on peg 2 was not having much luck with the adjacent groyne as the wind took two sets of rigs over it. With no fish appearing “yoda” Thomas peg 10 decided on plan ‘b’ with 2 hooks just inside the bank and a slider just behind the breaker. The slider brought hysterical laughs from “red stuff” Randell (peg 7) as he quipped “a slider at Bacton, you must be joking”. However, he soon had to eat those words as “yoda” was holding up a plump 25cm flounder caught on the slider, yes slider!
Unfortunately, taunting “red stuff” by holding up the flounder was a wrong move by “yoda” as it prompted “red stuff” to go short, very short and immediately he was reeling in a 24cm flounder. A repeat of that cast saw another fish and this time a 42cm bass and young Henry was on a charge. Seeing where the action was prompted “steady” Carter (peg 6) to follow suit resulting in a nice 29cm flounder on his card. Likewise “inspector” Morse (peg 5) found a small dab in a similar fashion as well as a small bass but unfortunately undersize. “consultant” Allison (peg 3) was also finding the fish with a 23cm and plump 31cm flounder soon on his card.
Everyone else were finding it tough but finally “captain” Ellis (peg 2), “sandy coke” Loke (peg 4), “silverfox” Neave (peg8) and “no name yet” Ellis all managed to card a small flattie. However, after all his woes at the start with his trolley “dickleburgh man” Camilleri’s day continued to have a torrid day as he couldn’t find a single fish even from a prestigious end peg 1. At the other end (peg 10) “yoda” was managing to find some small flounders but it was “red stuff” who was doing the business. After scoring close in he had decided to add a few more yards and again he found the fish including a nice 32cm flounder to add to his card of 23-25cm flounders.
This flurry of fish meant that at the whistle Henry “red stuff” Randell had done the job by a considerable margin with 4lb 5 2/3oz from 9 fish. Next was Ivan “consultant” Allison with 1lb 4 1/3oz from 4 fish closely followed by Tony “yoda” Thomas with 1lb 2 2/3oz from 5 fish. Heaviest club flat and round points both went to Henry Randell for his 32cm (13oz) flounder and 42cm (1lb 9oz) bass. The super pools was taken by Henry Randell 1st, Tony Thomas 2nd and John Carter (1lb 1 1/3oz) 3rd.
A match which demonstrated that fishing east of Castaways does produce fish but in hindsight we probably would have done better on our favourite stretch in front of the Gas site, particularly as the wind had dropped and switched to westerly at the end. This would have at least given us slightly deeper water and maybe some bigger flounders. Anyway we now have another venue on club cards at Bacton but we need to be aware of its parking short comings. This was played out in the final drama of the day as everyone rushed off to see the “other match” with Mr Loke attempting a three wheel get away. Although he got away successfully Mr Allison wasn’t so lucky as his three wheel attempt left him marooned requiring a good tow to get him on his way.
Next club match is the “Mackeral Bash” at CLEY on Friday 6th July fishing 6:00 – 9:30. This will not be Summer Accumulator match but just a straight ‘super pools’ match. This will be followed by the second West Norfolk Challenge Series match on Saturday 14th July fishing from 8:30 – 1:30 at KINGS LYNN East Bank fishing the far north end (seaward) of this stretch. This match will be a Summer Accumulator match replacing one of the cancelled matches.
