The Woodward Cup was this weeks trophy match held at Cley, and after last weeks poor results several members opted to stay home leaving us with only 11 optimists.
Early in the match Henry "Frosty" Randell had a good bass bend his size 2 hook straight and disappear back into the surf, he still managed to pull out a decent bass of 44cm along with 3 other fish to his tally but not enough this week to get him into the frame with 2lb 7oz. Conditions suited Tony "Yoda" Thomas perfectly as he managed to find fish straight away leaving a perplexed Paul "Scoop" Fenech wondering what he was doing wrong, with no fish for him for almost the first 3 hours of the match, this was also the case for Dene "Smooth" Conway who could only watch as his wife Nicole "Specimen Hunter" Conway caught two good flounders , one at 29cm and one at 32cm followed up with an excellent sole of 36cm and these 3 fish proved enough to take the 4th podium spot with 2lb 9 1/3oz, eventually Dene managed to find the fish but had no chance of catching up with the leaders and settled with his 5 fish for 1lb 71/3.
Peter "Inspector" Morse on the other hand was catching consistently and managed 7 fish for 3lb 15 2/3 , two pegs away Paul "Pablo" Thorburn started to find the fish after also losing a good bass in the surf and managed an impressive fight back with 7 fish for 2lb 12 1/3 enough to secure him 3rd place overral.
Last weeks winners were struggling , with Peter "Sandycoke" Loke only managing 1 fish for 0lb 7oz and Paul "Scoop" Fenech eventually finding 3 fish for 0lb 13 1/3oz to save the blank.
Sam "The Hat" Attew also saved the blank with a solitary dab, meanwhile Ian "Lambo" Lambert found 3 fish for 1lb 4 1/3, John "Silverfox" Neave sneaked 5 fish in for 1lb 8 2/3oz.
In the end it was Tony "Yoda" Thomas who ended up with 8 fish for 4lb 14oz including 2 bass one at 41cm and one at 46cm.
47 fish were caught and released with the majority of fish being good sized flounders from 27cm up to 34cm and of course the quality sole at 36cm for 1lb 2 2/3oz
Trimingham is next weeks match and anyone who is unsure of how to get there please contact Dene and lets hope with the fishing improving a few more members venture back onto the beaches.
