Cley Beach Rubbish – The HSAC Litter Solution – message from committee!

A number of you may be aware that certain parish counsellors in Cley are raising the issue of litter on their beach and are implicating anglers as the prime culprits. This situation has reached a stage where they are considering banning Sea Angling at Cley although I believe this would be very difficult to enforce.

HSAC has match rules that ensures we never leave litter but we know that a number of pleasure anglers do leave empty bait wrappers, beer cans, etc. on the beach which we have all witnessed. There are other users of the beach who do leave rubbish and there is always the stuff that floats ashore so it may seem harsh that they are targeting anglers but in this case they may well make up the majority of the offenders.

Our objective now is to demonstrate that HSAC acts responsibly when it comes to litter and that the parish council should focus in some other way than a ban to get the offending anglers and other beach users to be more litter conscious.

To address this situation some angling organisations are arranging a mega beach clean at Cley which can produce an immediate one off result. However, our committee has discussed this matter in depth and has come up with a more long term strategy that applies not only to Cley but to all the beaches the club fishes. The committee has agreed that during a match each club member should collect any rubbish that may be around his/her peg and bring it back to the car park in match bucket or carrier bag. At the car park there will be a “HSAC Beach Litter Collection Point”, namely a black refuse bag(s), where the litter can be deposited. This will then be taken by a committee member to the nearest recycle centre for disposal.

This request is of course voluntary but the committee does urge that all members participate to help us all address the litter problem. The committee feels that this is a more long term solution addressing all of our match venues not just one and is solution that could be adopted by others.

Thank you for your attention.

Regards,

Tony Thomas
