Cley Friday 6th July 2012 – Mackeral Bash
The 4th annual “Mackeral Bash” was for a change switched from Kelling to Cley to try and ensure fish being caught. To date after three “Mackeral Bash”matches only one mackerel had been caught so everyone was optimistic that this bogey would be beaten particularly as 100s had already been caught at Cley this year. Fishing the full flood on a calm sea would give us a good chance to beat this bogey although there was a little swell which gave us some colour close in. For once the weather was fine with a light southerly and for the most part clear blue sky.
The small hard core of club members gathered at Cley beach car park and first had to determine the rules. A pegged match was agreed to keep us all together but the drawing of positions was sufficient to know where we were all to go. We would fish to the number of mackerel caught eliminating the need to measure. As usual 3 hooks was the maximum much to the disappointment of “silver fox” Neave who soon had his clippers out on his 4 & 6 feather rigs. At this point “no hat” Attew disappeared and was then seen chasing a seagull. Never mind Sam quipped “consultant” Allison he’s only after his feathers. With no club points at stake it was agreed to have just the usual super pools comp with initially winner takes all but accountant “sandy coke” Loke with king prawns in mind insisted on 1st & 2nd.
Initial plans were to fish east of the wreck but that looked rather shallow and with pleasurers in the vicinity of the wreck we agreed on our usual stretch, westward from the boats which was being vacated by pleasurers. With just a short walk all ambled leisurely to their drawn positions to start the long drudge of cast and retrieve for the next 3½ hours. A few other anglers were doing the same along the beach but nothing was coming ashore so it looked as though we were in for a long haul. Everyone soon got into their individual regimes of 3 or more casts and then a short banter session or a little sustenance to pass the time. The tide started to flood but things remained quiet until “consultant” Allison suddenly had 2 mackeral on his card. At distance he said so we all start to belt out as far as we could.
It was soon apparent that those fish were a ‘flash in the pan’ as the small club contingent started to get slightly weary from the relentless casting and retrieving. With the tide flooding for an evening tide the beach started to fill up with others who wanted to fill their freezers up for the winter whiting. After more than 2 hours there was only 2 fish to show for all the effort but things at last started to change slightly as “sandy coke” Loke at last found a fish. This was followed shortly afterwards with another, you always knew when he had a fish on by the steady slow winding of his multiplier and none of this jerking stuff. As we got towards the finale a quick change of feathers by “yoda” Thomas resulted in a double shot to give him a score on the board. It was obvious that the fish were coming on as locals started picking up traces full of fish and “consultant” Allison added 3 more to his total. Then at last “silver fox” Neave found a double shot in the dying minutes of the match but no such luck for “no hat” Attew who couldn’t find a single fish whilst all around caught at least a fish.
In the end Ivan “consultant” Allison with his 5 mackeral took the super pools with a 3 way tie for second place with Peter “sandy coke” Loke , John “silver fox” and Tony “yoda” Thomas all getting just 2 mackeral. Not a particularly exciting match with a lot of effort for such few fish but the banter was good. Anyway that’s mackerel fishing for you in North Norfolk!
The club’s next match is the second West Norfolk Challenge Series match on Saturday 14th July fishing from 8:30 – 1:30 at KINGS LYNN East Bank fishing the far north end (seaward) of this stretch and please bring a raffle prize. This match will be a Summer Accumulator match replacing one of the cancelled matches.
