Due to the Caister Charity Open a seriously depleted turnout gathered at Cley beach car park for an early 8:00 a.m. start for the club’s 2nd Winter season match. Joining the group was Chris “lureman” Belcher who although living in Derby has joined the club, welcome aboard Chris. A chilly start with a cloudless sky, exactly what we did not want but there was a little colour in the water and the wind was in the right direction, south westerly. Pegging was the usual stretch to the left of the car park from the boats west.
With such an early start many were not ready at the whistle but that did not matter too much as will be seen later. The plan was to fish over the top (HW 10:30 a.m.) for early whiting, if they weren’t there then we were going to struggle. The weed was still there but in much less quantity and was just manageable. Booms were the order of the day and on his second cast “yoda” had a typical flounder nod resulting in a nice 25cm specimen on his card. This was followed 2 casts later with another smaller flounder, were we going to at last have a good September session. Optimism soon turned to frustration as cast after cast produced just weed and stripped hooks, the vermin were still active.
“Silverfox” then appeared to have a good whiting on the beach which turned out to be a 30cm bass. This followed by “inspector” getting a pin whiting and weaver double shot , just not his day. “Lureman” was picking up this match stuff pretty quickly but was only finding weed and crabs. He was not having a very productive weekend but he had been giving a master class in bait digging and peeler gathering by “moto maint” at Blakeney along with match tactics and rigs from members on the day. He also found a spot to pitch his “van” at young Henry’s so he is now fully prepared for the bass next April and May.
Over the top, things did not improve and even the vermin began to become disinterested. As the tide ebbed young Henry appeared on the beach, unable to make the match due to an emergency reed cutting job. When he saw the sea he told “yoda” he should be just 20 yards even though the gutter was full of weed. Reluctantly “yoda” lobbed out a long snooded flapper into the gutter. Then whilst removing the weed on his line laying in the gutter a distinctive tap tap was felt on his line resulting in a 20cm flounder on the beach. A great beam went across young Henry’s face and ordered “yoda” to eat his hat.
Well that was the last of the action for the day with Tony “yoda” Thomas taking the honours with just 9 2/3oz from the 3 flounders and everyone else blanking. There was fish at the start and at the end so we now know that if the whiting at not there then we need to fish the ebb for the flatties. Let’s hope we get it right for the next match.
With another Open at Pakefield (Lowestoft Sea Anglers) on club match day it has been decided to bring forward the club’s next match at Bacton to Saturday 24th September fishing 8:30 – 1:30 meeting as usual at Castaways. Hopefully this will allow club members to fish both the club match and the Open. Please note that the club’ mobile (07899032984) now contains details of the club’s next match.
