Cley Sunday 27th January 2013 – 4th Leg Winter Accumulator

Cley Sunday 27th January 2013 – 4th Leg Winter Accumulator

After the vagaries of the previous weekend the club was trying to put some normality back into its match activity but yet again the weather had to have a say in the matter.  Even without this intervention numbers were always going to be down with “captain” Ellis and “last cast” Watts chasing much need brownie points and “off duty” Gibbs and “yoda” Thomas on SAMF Challenge duties.  Not too certain about “non-dickleburgh man” Camilleri although some say he is after some other sport.  “better booms” Beeton had crocked his shoulder again leaving “consultant” Allison’s bait situation requiring some mileage action.  “steady” Carter and also probably “sandy coke” Loke were put off by the overnight down pour which also made “consultant” Allison’s decision easier.  “young” Henry was back in reed mode so all in all a smaller than usual turn out gathered at the Cley beach car park.  Numbers were boosted by a new member in the form of Chris “big hooks” Ditchburn who has joined the club, welcome aboard Chris!

A strong westerly wind was having a say in this match’s activity and made it not as comfortable as one would like but the sky was dry and the wet stuff stayed away.  The overnight conditions had provided a 2 to 3ft swell but not enough to put the fish off.  With such a westerly wind no one wanted to walk too far against it so for a change pegging was straight over and westward rather than from the boats.  From the off all deployed their usual Cley tactics with one or two opting for a one strategy tactic.  At the start “silver fox” Neave (peg 2), “no hat” Attew (peg 3) and “mobility” Morse (peg 6) were into small dabs and at this stage it looked as though the whiting had gone to ground in the rough weather.  However, fast improving “new buddy” Turk (peg 5) showed this not to be so as he soon had a whiting and then a flounder on his card.  Also demonstrating that big hooks do work was “big hooks” Ditchburn (peg 7) landing his first club fish, a nice 30cm whiting. With only large fresh blow lug to play with “ex-bag lady” Simmons (peg 4) had opted for that one strategy tactic of big hooks and biggish baits targeting big points scoring flounders and immediately scored with a cracking 30cm flounder followed shortly afterwards by a slightly smaller version.

After the elations of getting yet another end peg “peep peep” Conway (peg 1) was struggling and was having problems finding a sizeable fish but well into lunch time he eventually found a scorecard dab followed a little while later by a 25cm flounder.  In between his coaching activity with “big hooks” Ditchburn “mobility” Morse was finding the dabs along with a good points scoring 30cm flounder.  “silver fox” Neave was up to his usual plodding tactics as he continued to reel in a succession of small dabs.  Likewise rejuvenated “new buddy” Turk was adding small dabs and a flounder to his early whiting.  “ex-bag lady” Simmons’s strategy came to an abrupt end after those early flounders as he was unable to find anymore and was unable to switch tactics.  “big hooks” Ditchburn and “peep peep” Conway managed to add a few  dabs in the later stages but not sufficient to challenge for the lead.  However, “no hat” Attew was doing just that as he was on a charge with 2 nice whiting but rather too late in the match.

In the end it was Peter “mobility” Morse who took the honours with 2lb 7oz from 10 fish.  Next was Andy “new buddy” Turk with 1lb 14 1/3oz from 11 fish followed by John “silver fox” Neave with 1lb 10oz also from 11 fish.  Heaviest flat club points was shared by Peter Morse and Peter Simmons with their 10 2/3oz (30cm) flounders and heaviest round club points to new man Chris Ditchburn with his 6 2/3oz (30cm) whiting.

A close match for most with 52 fish being recorded (42 dabs, 6 flounders and 4 whiting) weighing a total of 11lb 4oz.  Obviously, a match where the turnout affected the total fish caught but it’s good to see the whiting still around particularly at Cley.  Let’s hope they hang around for a little while longer.

The club’s next match is the 5th Leg of the Winter Accumulator at Salthouse on Sunday 3rd February fishing 10:00 to 3:00.
