Pegged for twenty five anglers and with the fish in poor numbers, this match was always going to be a very scratchy affair.

Even so, the field still managed to bag a total of 110 fish between them – which was pretty good considering the poor prospects.

There was a steady North Westerly breeze blowing throughout the day giving a slight roll to the chocolate brown water. However, with virtually no tide to contend with, even 4oz of plain lead fished at distance failed to seek out the fish holding spots for most.

Our local in-form hotrod Peter Simmons (peg 11) had found himself pegged on one of the few hot-spots to the west of the ‘cliff area’ – and to those around him, appeared to be bagging up heavily with a steady stream of Dabs through most of the first half of the match. However, with a large proportion being under the 18cm size limit, he only managed to record a total of 8 fish on his card putting him down the field in 7th place.

Our resident junior, Henry Randell (peg 20), once again proved his mettle on the match scene by creeping into 6th overall with a mixed bag of 5 reasonable sized fish.

The top results came from either end of the line up; – Tony Thomas (peg 1), Sam Attew (peg 3), Clyde Leggett (peg 22), and Peter Loke (peg 23), with most of the mid-section struggling with undersized fish. The only exception was John Lacey (peg 19), who managed to exploit a known hot-spot to finish in 2nd place with a total of 10 fish.

Overall winner Clyde Leggett managed to bag a very reasonable 13 Dab for 3lb.

The HSAC ‘Club match for points’ produced a few surprises, – with neither Tony Thomas nor Peter Loke (=3rd in the Open) recording sizable fish.

It was left to Henry Randell to take top spot with a total of 4 sizeable fish for 1lb 4 2/3 oz.
