The Annual Winter Open took place at Kelling on 31st January, with freezing conditions dominating the weekend weather it was debatable whether we would cancel the match or not, as it turned out the sun was shining and the wind had died of considerably, giving those of us who were brave enough the chance of success.
The wind chill factor was forecast for minus 12, and they were not far wrong with that estimation, with 14 anglers braving the freezing conditions we set about the task in hand.
Welcome first to our latest club member Paul Fenech, fishing his debut match at HSAC, the match started off very slow and the first bit of action was Sherry “is that how they clap in japanese” Murray who snapped her rod after winding into one of her famous power casts, she was quickly supplied with a spare rod from Dene so as not to miss out on the action.
With a massive tide we were expecting at least a little action but it proved to be a struggle from start to finish, end pegger Alan Doy did the business with 6 fish for 1lb 7, 2nd place went to Peter Morse who also had 6 fish for 1lb 2 1/3, 3rd place went to Paul Fenech with 5 fish for 0lb 15 2/3oz and scraping into 4th spot was Tony Thomas who had 4 fish for 0lb 11 1/3oz.
As no round fish were caught the heaviest flat went to Simon Farrow with a flounder of 27cm and 2nd place was split between Alan Doy and John Neave who both had flats at 26cm.
It was a struggle for everyone but lets hope conditions improve in the coming weeks.

2nd Peter Morse
