With the return of a few regulars an improved turnout gathered at our Muckleburgh Collection assigned car park for a rather early 9:00 start. Well not quite all, as time ticked towards 8:30 there was no sign of “Motorway Maintenance” and then limbering over the final rutted road stretch a white shadow appeared complete with rotating ventilator, he had not read his newsletter! So back to fishing, with codling appearing in the wreck area early in the week it was decided to peg from the wreck eastwards towards Weybourne beach car park.
A cold breezy north easterly with a moderate swell gave us plenty of colour and an ideal sea for those elusive codling. Couple this with fishing the full ebb on a good tide and the species should have been rolling in. All were off at the whistle except “class act” Thorburn who was busily laying out his vast array of baits expecting a 10:00 start whilst everyone else were waiting for the first nods of rods. Within minutes “yoda” Thomas’s rod started bouncing and a nice 31cm pout was soon on the beach followed 2 casts later by another similar specimen.
It was quiet all along the stretch apart from “yoda’s” rod and “silverfox” Neave on peg 1 who was steadily bringing in small dabs and pin whiting, yes they were still there! With action subsiding it was time for a little banter but whilst “yoda” was having a chin wag with “inspector” and “last cast” he turned to see his rod bouncing all over the place. Could this be a match winning fish but sad to say attempts to retrieve found it in a snag and a good fish lost; always stick with your rod under match conditions. A short while later “inspector” Morse’s rod did the same and straight into a heft or so he thought but persistence paid off and a nice 2lb plus codling was on the beach; he stayed with his rod.
Things then started to get a little quiet but out of the blue “yoda” had a double shot of codling on the beach one about 2lb and the other 2lb plus. Euphoria, this could be a match winning haul but this was soon switched to utter despondency as he had brought in his lost trace complete with the two codling so no score. With the apparent chance of more codling “Motorway Maintenance” suggested an extra hour so with this agreed most changed tactics slightly for a while apart from “silverfox” who continued to bring in the small fish. We must have hit lucky with a shoal of codling coming inshore via the wreck and unfortunately, with the tide being a 1/3m lower than predicted this must have pushed them out again, sods law! or just fishing!
A rather wasted hour’s extension then but that’s fishing for you. All apart from “silverfox” with a nice 29cm flounder and “last cast” who pushed himself on to the podium with a sizeable whiting and rockling on his last cast. Winner on the day was Peter “inspector” Morse with 2lb 13 1/3oz from 6 fish and with his 46cm codling keeping him well in contention to take this season’s cod cup. Next was Mr Reliable John “silverfox” Neave with 2lb 1/3oz from 20 fish closely followed by Mike “last cast” Watts with 1lb 12 2/3oz from 13 fish.
All in all not a bad match with plenty of friendly banter and proving that there is still codling on the North Norfolk Coast providing you select the right spot and right tide. Next match is the final club one for the 2010-2011 season combined with final North Norfolk National Sea League match at Bacton fishing 12:00 to 5:00. This match has traditionally thrown up some decent codling and all the signs are good although the “inspector” has everything crossed that this doesn’t happen this year.
Just a reminder to all members that the club’s AGM and Presentation Evening will definitely be held on Saturday 26th March at the Kelling Heath Holiday Park. We are still waiting for menus so once these arrive they will be distributed to all members.
