We all knew that it would be difficult to match the previous week’s amazing match and too right we were where in 6 days those stonking whiting had completely disappeared. A flat calm greeted us for our last Kelling match of the season with a light south westerly and slight overcast sky meant at least a comfortable session. Fishing the last hour of the flood and the rest down meant there was always a good chance of whiting but this was a small tide which was not a good omen. After the previous match’s successes pegging had to be in front of the wreck to tempt a repeat performance but a couple of pleasurers kept us a little more west than planned. A smaller than usual band of club stalwarts gathered nice and early at our Muckleborough meeting point and pegs were soon drawn. All were soon trundling off wreck bound in their various vehicles to park close to their pegs avoiding the energy sapping trudge through the shingle and there was no sign of the trolley dollies.
With everyone nattering an early start was prompted but some had not got the message and were left baitless at the whistle, many apologies lads! With everyone parked in some cases buddyless on top of the shingle bank it was the usual Kelling chuck that kicked off this particular campaign. After the previous match everyone expected to see their rods banging away from the off particularly as we were nearing the top of the flood but it was not to be. It was very slow, very very slow but “inspector” Morse (peg 2) soon found a small dab and “yoda” Thomas (peg 3) a nice 23cm specimen. Further down the stretch “better booms” Beeton (peg 8) was back in his element and also found a couple of nice 22cm dabs and “chig” Mushroom (peg 10) was soon into his previous week’s mode with a good 24cm dab on his card. As the hour rolled by it was pretty obvious that everyone else was struggling, illustrated by the amount of banter and general walking about.
High water was quickly over and it soon came apparent that the whiting had well and truly gone, what a shame particularly after the previous match at same venue. A small tide does not bring the fish in and even the dabs don’t want to play ball when it’s like this. Not much comfort for those struggling to catch just one fish, in particular “new buddy” Turk (peg 4), “silverfox” Neave (peg 6), “captain” Ellis (Peg 7) and “consultant” Allison (peg 9). “no hat” Attew (peg 1) was originally in this gang but he soon put his years of shingle skill to good use finding a small dab followed by a nice 24cm version and then a monster 28cm specimen. These gave him a good points haul, throwing him into contention for the match. The other strugglers then eventually managed to find a fish which included a monster 28cm dab for “new buddy” Turk. However, it was some time before “captain” Ellis had one of 25cm but his mind was probably on those Bridlington cod he was going to land in 3 weeks time as he only managed to add a further 19cm dab to his card.
As slack water, if you could call it that, came and went action became even dyer but “better booms” Beeton was doing his usual trick of finding the odd fish in this quiet period. Also finding fish was “chig” Mushroom along with “yoda” Thomas but you could not say their catch rate was extreme. “no hat” Attew’s charge had come to an abrupt end but he was still able to find the odd fish. The man in the grove in this match was “inspector” Morse who was getting a steady flow of reasonable dabs throughout putting him well in contention.
It was this catch rate that gave Peter “inspector” Morse the match with 1lb 10oz from 8 fish closely followed by Bill “better booms” Beeton with 1lb 8 2/3oz from 9 fish. Final podium slot went to that old club stalwart Sam “no hat” Attew with 1lb 8oz from 7 fish. Heaviest flat club points was shared by Sam and Andy “new buddy” Turk for their 28cm (8oz) dabs and there was no heaviest round fish. The Super Pools went the same way as the club match.
Back to reality with this match with just 50 fish being caught weighing a miserable 9lb 80z which would not have got you in the top 10 in the last match. All fish were dabs and not a sign of those stonking whiting so looks as though they have finally gone to spawn. Normal shingle service has been resumed on the ridge but a couple of sizeable bass were caught by a club member on the same day at Sheringham so maybe, just maybe it’s a good omen. With the last two matches at Trimingham and Bacton we could fall upon one of these or maybe a rogue coding. It is March and we used to get a spring run but I suppose it’s just wishful thinking these days.
With a seriously strong biting North Easterlies forecast for Sunday 24th February the committee has decided to cancel the 8th Leg of the Winter Accumulator at Salthouse on that day. The next club match will be the 9th leg of the Winter Accumulator on Sunday 3rd March at Trimingham fishing 12:00-5:00.
