With a number of members fishing the Humber on the Sunday it had been scheduled to fish the club’s 6th Leg of the Summer Accumulator at Kelling on Saturday 2nd June. In hindsight this was a good move as the following day was atrocious and very wet. Weather was perfect for a session on the shingle, dry, slightly overcast with a light east to south east breeze but a little chilly. A 1 to 2 foot swell gave us relatively good conditions for the bass and flounders but pleasure results of late showed this was not a forgone conclusion. Another trip to Kelling gave use another opportunity to check out the block house although with a smallish tide over the bottom could leave us short of water later on but all agreed to give it a shot. With the usual turn out gathering at our usual Muckleburgh parking slot we all convoyed to our other parking area below the bunkers to the west of the ex-radar.
Pegging was from the block house west as this stretch seemed to perform better at our last excursion here and all pegs were soon in place thanks again to “young Henry”. All pegs were quickly drawn and with a just a short walk over the shingle everyone was soon getting organised on the flat shingle above the last high tide mark. Fishing over the bottom could mean chasing the tide but being a smallish tide could leave the option to remain at the top of the bank. With bass and flounders probably on the menu the majority were armed with lug, wrigglers and crab to try and tempt a specimen shoreward. With a relatively shallow beach, particularly for the low order pegs all attempted to get a little distance at the whistle.
It wasn’t long before the action started as “captain” Ellis (peg 6) soon got back into the groove after winning Kings Lynn by landing a cracking 33cm flounder within minutes of the start. The beam on his face signified his satisfaction with this start as he had announced before the match his quest to move up the summer accumulator leader board. Fish were soon coming ashore with “silver fox” Neave (peg 2) and “bass on” Thomas (peg 3) both recording 28cm flounders and “sandy coke” Loke (peg 1) and “red stuff” Randell (peg 4) both recording small dabs. The flatties were certainly there as at the other end “inspector” Morse (peg 9) and “end peg” Allen (peg8) also found a small dab each for their cards. Bucking the flattie trend was “consultant” Allison (peg 7) and “no hat” Attew who both had small pout with “consultant” finding an undersize schoolie with his pout.
The tide was still ebbing hard and with there being no real depth the current was strong prompting “sandy coke” Loke to comment that he thought he was fishing at Cley. This also produced some fine May weed which was more of a nuisance than a problem. With the bottom of the tide approaching action took a turn for the better as “bass on” Thomas landed 41cm bass which was quickly matched by “consultant” Allison (41cm), “end peg” Allen (38cm) and “inspector” Morse (39cm) to leave the match wide open. The higher order pegs seemed to be performing well as both “inspector” Morse and “no hat” Attew were reeling in a raft of dabs and flounders with “inspector” also finding a small plaice. “captain” Ellis’s start had faltered a bit but a 36cm bass enabled him to recover some of his poise. This could not be said for “red stuff” Randell who was slipping more and more into his frustration mode as he could not find a solitary bass after trying big pennel crab baits at range and in the gutter. “sandy coke” Loke was also having a bassless day but did manage to find a stonking 35cm flounder after drifting on to the sand bar.
Fishing over the bottom meant some movement throughout the match and as the tide started to rise we all knew that we could get some real action. This duely happened as on cue there appeared to be some serious activity going on around “no hat” Attew’s buddy with multiple measures seen to be heading that way. A large tail could then be seen flapping around so a serious fish had been landed and sure enough “no hat” Attew soon had a nice 55 cm bass on his card worth 158 points or around 3lb 5oz. Well done Sam! Not satisfied with this single fish he soon had another 37 cm bass on his card. His old sparring partner “silver fox” Neave was having a quiet day but he too was getting in on the bass act by finding a 41 cm specimen and then shortly afterwards one of 42 cm. In the final hour, more bass were appearing to “bass on” Thomas (36 cm), “captain” Ellis (37 cm), “consultant” Allison (41 cm) and “inspector” Morse (38 cm). Flatties continued to be recorded but it was the bass that did the business in this particular match.
In the end it wasn’t hard to determine the winner with Sam “no hat” Attew and his big bass taking the honours with 6lb 10oz from 13 fish. Next was Ivan “consultant” Allison with 5lb 1/3oz from 11 fish followed by Peter “inspector” Morse with 4lb 7 2/3oz from 14 fish. Heaviest club flat points went to Peter Loke for his 35cm (1lb 1 1/3oz) flounder and heaviest round points to Sam Attew for his 55cm (3lb 4 2/3oz) bass. The super pools was taken by Peter Morse with Richard Ellis 2nd and Tony Thomas (3lb 13oz) 3rd.
A match where 2 sizeable bass could not get you into the top 5 showed we had at last found some real bass in a club competition. The appearance of the flaties amongst the bass helped to keep the momentum going and made it a most enjoyable match for all. Altogether 80 fish were caught weighing in total 33lb 10oz. This match demonstrated that the block house can fish but we probably went just a bit too far west onto the sand bar as shown by peg 1 results but we’ll get it right next time.
The next club match is at Salthouse on Sunday 10th June fishing 9:00-2:00 please check out club phone (07899032984) for venue status on the day of match.
