With the boys at their shooting games around our usual Kelling haunt, it was a trip around the air strip and past the bunkers to fish the block house stretch on the east side of Kelling Hard. A new venue for most but one that can throw up a few bass and good flounders if you get the tide and conditions right. For a change the weather gods were being good to us at the start with bright skies and a light to moderate south westerly, ideal for this venue with the wind over your left shoulder. With a little or no swell would make it ideal for some serious flounders but probably not so for the early bass. It was soon apparent that we would have a reasonable turn out again as one after another were seen negotiating the shooting boys and the air strip route to our new parking spot below the bunkers. Last to arrive was “young henry” who had to take his time climbing Muckleburgh hill but his red mean machine was soon seen jugging along above the bunkers. Also joining us for the day was that respected angler from Suffolk way, “rite rods” Readie who thought he’d get a bit of practice on this venue after a rod collection.
Pegging was either side of the block house to try and maximise the best parts of this stretch. With a better than expected turn out an additional peg had to be conjured up, sorry Mr Lokie for peg 13! With the tide already ebbing there was a good flat stretch of shingle between the banks to set up on and with just a short walk all were soon ready for the challenge. At the off all opted for the usual gentle lob well all except “rite rods” Readie (peg 2) who just couldn’t resist going just that little bit further, he’s programmed that way! It was soon apparent that we could be in for a good session as rods started to rattle and dabs started to be reeled in, not large but putting points on cards. First to show was “better booms” Beeton (peg 3) who had a 18cm version on his card with just 7 minutes gone followed by “yoda” Thomas (peg 1) with a double shot of 19 cm dabs shortly afterwards. Although it was ebbing fast there was still plenty of left to right tide and this kept the fish on the feed.
“last cast” Watts (peg 11), “red stuff” Randell (peg 9) and “sandy coke” Loke (peg 13) could be seen returning small dabs to get them off the mark but it was a slow start for everyone else. “smooth” Conway (peg 10) was trying to repeat his previous week’s performance and was more focused on targeting bass but did manage to find a small dab to get him started. Next to the block house, “cuddly” Carter (peg 5) and “steady” Carter (peg 6) managed to find a decent 28cm and 26cm dab to get their match under way. Also with a good 28cm dab was “class act” Thorburn (peg8) who was struggling with his techniques to find those stonking flounders and bass. Having a torrid time at this early stage was “the consultant” Allison (peg 12), “sliverfox” Neave (peg 7) and “new gear” Vertigan (peg 4) who eventually found a small dab each. Unfortunately, “rite rods” Readie was really struggling and although he’d abandoned his distance ideas he was unable find anything in close but he was really only here for one purpose, bass!
Slack water then arrived and that was it for a while as the fish just switch off except for the odd small dab. Time for a saunter along the match stretch to see what the opposition were doing and at that stage it looked like a 3 horse race between “better booms”, “last cast” and “yoda” with “sandy coke” having some tricks up his sleeve. Nobody was catching at this stage but there was activity as downwind from pegs 5 & 6 there was a strong noxious aroma of bacon butties and it was getting stronger. With “cuddly” collecting pegs, thanks Pam and “steady” attending his rod, they had left “Carter’s Café” unattended and the old bacon and sausages were getting rather sizzled. Not a disaster that a good scrape could not fix and at least the buddy was left intact.
Well back to the fishing as the tide, right to left started to pick up and the battle between “better booms” and “yoda” was again resumed. Both started to pick up dabs each cast but it was “better booms” who took the initiative with double and treble shots but they were small whereas “yoda” was finding slightly bigger versions. In between them was “rite rods” and at last he found some fish to put some points on his card. His crab only policy on the odd hook was beginning to pay off as he reeled in towards the end a good dab and good flounder on straight crab. Further down the stretch “last cast” was finding some quality dabs but angler of the day was “sandy coke” who found a massive 36 cm dab worth a whopping 56 points or just under 1lb 3oz in old money. This certainly will be a candidate for specimen of the season and thrust him into contention for the match as well as giving “the consultant” a fright of his life. Although everyone else was catching the odd dab and flounder they were not in contention to take the match.
Back at the low end the competition was intensifying as “better booms” and “yoda” continued to pull in the fish. However, “better booms” could only manage small dabs a lot of which were undersize whereas “yoda” was finding some reasonable flounders and sizeable dabs. The match was almost sealed for “yoda” with a 36cm bass on his last but one cast followed by a 29cm flounder on his last cast. This meant that Tony “yoda” Thomas did indeed take the honours with 4lb 15 1/3oz from 21 fish which included the only bass of the match which was a complete reverse of his last bassless match. With that stonking dab, Peter “sandy coke” Loke took the next spot with 3lb 4oz from just 9 fish. Final podium place was a tie between Bill “better booms” Beeton and Mike “last cast” Watts both with 2lb 11 2/3oz from 13 and 12 fish respectively. Peter Loke took the club heaviest flat points on the day with his 36cm (1lb 2 2/3oz) dab and Tony Thomas the club heaviest round points with his 36cm (15 2/3) bass. The super pools was taken by the same winners as the match.
With a slightly smaller turn out than last match 96 fish were recorded which was more than previous match but the total weight was less with just under 23lbs. For some it was a good match but for others not so but that’s match fishing for you. Although for some it was poor nobody really noticed when the heavens opened and tried to flatten us with hail stones. Anyway we now move on to a totally different venue where although the species are the same tactics, techniques and bait will have to all be adjusted from those on the shingle. Next match is at Bacton via Castaways Holiday Park on Sunday 29th April fishing 10:00-3:00 with HW at 12:17 on a 4.0m (Cromer) tide. This is contrary to what was previously stated were LW was at midday. With such a small tide we should be able to get in front of the revetments but the surfing forecast for Sunday is currently fresh North Easterly with a 5 foot swell. This could be good for bass which have been showing there but there could be too much white water so please check out club phone (07899032984) for venue status on the day of match.
