With bass throwing themselves on hooks all along the North Norfolk coast everyone was full of expectation for the club’s eastward expedition to Walcott. Unfortunately, the gods were having none of this and set those east north easterlies back in motion once again. With white water denying any attempts to savour this productive venue and weed creating problems on the shingle an eleven hour decision was made to fish Kings Lynn estuary particularly as “motorway maintenance” had filled his bags the previous day on the Nene estuary at Sutton Bridge.
An ebbing tide greeted us at Kings Lynn on a stretch through the old port authority behind the chemical works on the east side of the river Ouse. Pegging was up to and around the small sluice with yellow buoy topped posts giving two supposedly hot pegs (9 & 10) either side of the sluice. The high hedge and trees acting as a good wind break to the stretch giving totally the opposite conditions to the shingle and almost balmy in the unbroken sunshine. Most opted to negotiate the uneven track to fish in comfort from the back of their motors with the “motorway maintenance” family on the prime flounder pegs 1 & 2, “class act” on top end peg and “inspector” with “sandy coke” either side of the hot sluice pegs or so we thought.
Choice of baits was always going to be difficult with crab, lug, wrigglers, squid, mackerel along with other secret baits all on offer. Estuary fishing always brings up its own challenges such as what distance to fish and what rigs to use with snood lengths being a common debating point before the off. At the whistle all opted for different distances and it soon came apparent that the ebbing current was going to dictate this as lines started moving seaward. It is my opinion that first cast provides a good indicator of match prospects; fish in numbers good match; no fish a struggle and the latter was soon to prove the case. The only thing that came in first cast was weed, that fine stuff like hemp and almost impossible to pick off which was to plague us throughout the match.
First on the scorecard was “steady” Carter with a nice 12oz eel followed by a small flounder to “inspector” Morse and then quiet again for everyone. With no real vermin (crab) at this venue casts could be left out longer giving the opportunity for the usual walk abouts and friendly banter. As the tide started to ease the odd flounder and eel started to appear but it was “rite gear” Conway who was beginning to score. On a flounder hot spot he used his increasing flattie skills to land a 35cm specimen followed shortly after by a 29cm version. Up at the other end “class act” Thorburn was using the “George Smith” technique by setting up in the mud at the bottom of the bank but apart from one cracking bite only could manage a small flounder and eel.
Things were looking rather dyer for a few including “yoda” Thomas until his rod started gently bobbing and line moving down stream in no tide. A fish, maybe a boot lace said “steady” Carter but to everyone’s surprise a specimen 1lb 11oz eel was soon coming up the bank. However, it was “steady” Carter and “rite gear” Conway who were in contention and we all knew it was tight with “rite gear” wandering down the line to check out scores, a rare occasion. However, it was the now dubbed John “eel man” Carter who took the honours with 5 eels for 2lb 11 1/2oz closely followed by Dene “rite gear” Conway with 3 flounders and an eel for 2lb 7 1/3oz. Final podium spot went to Tony “yoda” Thomas with the single specimen eel for 1lb 11oz. The heaviest flat and round on the day went to Dene and Tony respectively.
Fishing with mud and flies was not the same as fishing the sand or shingle but on return to the coast the wind had increased and become unfishable so the right decision had been made and we had a match. Next match is Sunday 8th May at Cley fishing 10:00 till 3:00. The wind is forecast to ease and turn into the south so fishing the ebb could be a good match. Please note that the following match at Kelling has been moved from Saturday to Sunday 15th May fishing 2:00 till 7:00.
I am pleased to report that they have fixed gentlemen Dick and he is planning to be back on the beach at the next match.
