Our first 6 hours marathon on the River Ouse on the west side of Kings Lynn, this venue has proved in the past to be hectic with good sized flounders, the odd bass and plenty of eels and everyone was looking forward to some rod bending action, and we were not dissappointed. Tony "Yoda" Thomas started off very well using his experience of the venue to great advantage and continually caught fish through out all states of the tide, eithe side of him, Dene "Smoooth" Conway and Paul "Scoop" Fenech found themselves struggling to find a fish in the first two hours or so but that was to change later with both eventually finding some good action to boost their scores but not enough to get into the frame.
Further along the field old hand Dick "Eelman" Able had taken a double peg with young Henry "FrostyCrabs" Randell to show him how to fish for eels and this tuition certainly paid off as Henry cruised to his first win this season with 17 fish for 6lb 2 1/2oz, Tony thought he had done enough to win the match with an impressive 19 fish for 5lb 6 1/2 oz but that was also pipped by John Carter who managed 12 fish for 5lb 13oz giving Tony a 3rd place position. Dick Able slid home into 4th spot with 13 fish for 5lb 1/2oz he had hoped to have the biggest flounder of the season with a nice 36cm fish but it was John Carter who had a better one at 39cm which may still stand as biggest flat at next years presentation.
5th place went to Dene "Smoooth" Conway who using a tactic change went for big eels and managed 3 out of 3 casts and then the tide run died away, and he was left with 8 fish 3lb 10oz, it wasnt enough to get into the frame but valuable lessons were learnt for future matches in these venues. Paul "Scoop" Fenech also on a learning curve here ended up in 6th place with 8 fish for 2lb 5oz. 7th place went to Pam Carter who did well with 5 fish for 1lb 10 1/2 , 8th place went to Simon "tacklewhore" Farrow who was forced to abandon the match after a few hours due to the extreme heat and family needs but at least he managed to overcome his worries with a venue like this and didn’t blank. Final two spots went to John "Silverfox" Neave and back after a long break Nicole Conway, who both struggled to find the fish but both seemed to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and the good banter.
Sherry Murray who didnt fish today was responsible not only for her and Simons children but also managed to find the time to be the official club photographer today.
Once again this venue proved to be good whether it was the amounts of fish caught or the general nice day by the river feeling, its just a shame the heat was a bit over powering.
With the smooth hound now starting to appear in North Norfolk we turn our thoughts to next weekends summer open at Kelling which should produce large numbers of fish from bass and flounder to the big double figure smooth hounds which are waiting just offshore.
