Kings Lynn Saturday 11th August 2012 – 10th Leg Summer Accumulator & West Norfolk Challenge Round 3
The final Leg of the Summer Accumulator and Round 3 of the West Norfolk Challenge Series was to be played out on the river Gt. Ouse at Kings Lynn. With access finally established for the last two rounds of the Challenge on the West Bank it was back to our favourite stretch in contrast to the snaggy woes at the last round on the East Bank. An enthusiastic bunch were there nice and early waiting for the gate to be sprung although the ROAD CLOSED signs had got a few slightly concerned. The river was in “perfect condition”, nice and flat with a slow flooding tide. With a semi-overcast sky and the gentle south easterly breeze would just take the edge off the heat making it nice and comfortable wait for those rods to nod.
With the final round planned to be at the north end of the stretch, it was agreed to fish the south end just past the treatment works and pylons. With “young” Henry once again on Morston mussel duty it was back to TT to get the stretch pegged. No mud this time but the grass made it feel more like the Serengeti than West Norfolk, where had all the heifers gone. Pegs were quickly drawn and everyone was soon heading through the undergrowth to their allotted slot. It was soon apparent that we could have a good session as shoals of small fry could be seen in the margins and everyone was left wondering if they’d attracted the specimens. At the “whistleless” start (many apologies) the lack of tide left all the options open but it appeared everyone opted for 40-50 yard casts.
For a change there was no real mud to contend with except for those who like to get close to the water and camped on the narrow stretch of dryish mud at the top of the bank. With plenty of peg space it was difficult to judge the action but first cast did produce a nice 1lb eel for Tony (T) on peg 17 to get his card marked which was followed by a nice 30cm flounder to John (C ) on peg 15. Andy (D) on end peg 20 also started to find the small eels and had 4 in quick succession including one approaching a pound. Further down the stretch activity looked a bit slow but John (N) (peg 1), Dene (C ) (peg 2), Mike (D) (peg 6), Ivan (A) (peg 9), Mike (W) (peg 10) and Peter (L) (peg 11) were finding some good flounders.
As the tide flooded harder tactics had to change as holding bottom out became more difficult and the shoals of small fry got taken up by the current. For now the fish were still there with Richard (E ) (peg 5) at last finding a small eel and Peter (M) (peg 3) a good flounder. At this stage Matt (D) (peg 7) was missing his bass and struggling to find a fish but he did have his young entourage to keep under control. Also struggling was Sam (A) (peg 18) but this was probably down to an early afternoon kip and Pam (C) (peg 6) but she was not too concerned as she was out with her man. As the tide started to slacken Tony (T) managed to find another good eel which immediately started releasing small fry so that was what was attracting the bigger eels.
After his spat of eels Andy (D) suddenly struck into a points scoring 36 cm bass, well done Andy. However, slack water had arrived and the fish went to ground although normally at this time the big eels show but not this time. Even Andy (D) was struggling as nothing appeared for well over an hour but he was putting his experience and skill to good use. With the ebb starting to flow he found the flounders, just a few yards out and soon had some good flounders on his card. This activity sparked next man Sam (A) into life and he also found a couple of good flounders just yards out as did Tony (T). With the ebb picking up there was sudden shout or more like a scream from Pam (C) as she struggled to land a healthy 1lb 7oz eel, well done Pam!
A few more fish did appear on the ebb but not in the same numbers as the flood so some indication for future matches at this venue. With his flurry of flounders at the end gave matchman Andy Dawkins the honours on the day for the Challenge match with 4lb 13 ½ oz from 12 fish. Second on the day was Dene Conway whose improving flounder skills produced 3lb 5oz from 7 fish with Tony Thomas grabbing final podium slot with 2lb 14 ½ oz also from 7 fish. Dene and Andy took the Pools section prizes and Pam took the heaviest fish competition with her 1lb 7oz eel.
On the club front, the 10th leg of the Summer Accumulator was taken by Dene and Tony with Ivan Allison taking third place with 2lb 11oz from 7 fish. The heaviest club flat points went to Dene with his 31cm (12oz) flounder and heaviest round points to Pam with her 1lb 7oz eel. With this being the last Summer Accumulator match meant that John Carter took the Accumulator with 143 points, well done John. Next was Henry Randell with 133 points pipping Tony Thomas by 2 points on 131 points.
A reasonable day’s fishing where at least everyone caught at a relatively new stretch for the club. The monster flounders were not there like last year, probably due to the trawling of the Gt. Ouse but let’s hope they are allowed to replenish. The final West Norfolk Challenge Series match will be at Kings Lynn –West Bank (north end) on Sunday 9th September fishing 10:30 – 3:30. Please bring a raffle prize. The first winter club match will be at Salthouse on Sunday 16th September fishing 10:00 – 3:00. A committee meeting after this match agreed to run a similar West Norfolk Challenge Series to the same format during the summer of 2013.
