By Dene Conway Strong winds and flat seas greeted us at Kelling today for the Roy Waller Memorial Trophy and our Annual Open, attendance from non members was always going to be lower than usual due to 2 other large competitions on throughout our region, but we managed a fair turnout with 13 members and 5 non members, with todays raffle money going to Help 4 Heroes Charity everyone was in a generous mood and a good selection of prizes were available. .We pegged the match to the right with end pegs 18 to 20 being close to the wreck and for the first time we fished the open to size limits, the match started off well with most people getting in amongst Dabs and Flounders and Richard " Golden Bollox" Ives found a nice Whiting at 33cm, this turned out to be the one and only Whiting of the match. The main target species was Flounder and Dabs but these were sptread out amongst everyone with certain spots being more productive than others, the top 4 pegs were 3, 12, 17 and 20 from one end to the other.
If you were in the right spot lug tipped with fish baits seemed to be the way forward and one person who maximised his fishing was Tony "Yoda" Thomas maintaining his consistency and continuing throughout the match to catch fish when others around him were struggling, with an impressive 20 fish it was enough to secure yet another win and push him further up the leader board, Tony does seem to be the man to beat at the moment. Spencer Waldren also had an exceptional match with 23 fish including two Sole from peg 3 a renowned hot spot amongst club members, well done to him and hope to see him at some of the club matches in upcoming months.
3rd Place went to our latest HSAC member Peter Morse on peg 12 who managed 17 fish for 4lb 4oz, closely behind him was Peter "Baglady" Simmons who fought hard to try and keep on the tails of Tony T but just managed to squeeze into 4th place with 17 fish for 3lb 15 2/3. Heaviest Flat went to Sam "The Hat" Attew with a nice Dab of 12oz, the one Whiting caught by Richard proved to be the heaviest round of the day.
The Raffle and Donations for Help 4 Heroes Charity raised £61.50 so a big well done to everyone. Teams of 5′s start next week at Bacton , all HSAC members are urged to turn up and fish as this is also a club match and the Foreman Cup, you can either fish as an individual or fish within a Holt Team, so far we have 2 teams formed but with our numbers increasing that could easily be more.
