Salthouse18th May 9am to 2pm Low water 12.40pm

First things first, for those of you that received the newsletter issued at Salthouse, next weeks match venue is missing on some of the copies. Next weeks match is scheduled for Kelling 1000-1500 (high water 09.45). My apologies for the typo and I hope to see you all next week.

Salthouse this week and the sun was out once again. The wind was sharp and came straight off the sea, whipping it up a treat. As I sat in the car park waiting for all members to turn up it was quite pleasant, the shingle bank acting as a wind break.

There was great anticipation before the match with the sea state giving a good possibility for some sizeable bass.Near low water would produce the best numbers, possibly, maybe, fingers crossed…With the thought of bass being caught the car park turned into a market place with people buying and selling peeler crab and lug.

When it was time for the off it was an even split with a 3rd of the anglers going to the right of the car park, another 3rd going straight over and the final 3rd off to the left. No matter where you went along this part of the beach I think all of us thought the same when we saw the amount of rubbish that was floating by in the tide. I lost count of the number of palettes that went by and the plastic wrapping. Dene Conway hooked into a large piece of plastic caught in the breakers and it looked more like he was fighting a bronze whaler shark on the Namibian skeleton coast. Later on after the match was finished we found out that Dene wasn’t the only victim to this piece of plastic as golden balls had also had an encounter with it.

The fishing was hard work with the amount of rubbish floating past catching the line and pulling it straight into the large surf battering the beach. Many small bass and flounder were caught but these were few and far between. Towards low tide the sea state became slightly calmer but the amount of white water showing had increased. Lovely areas of surf started breaking just off shore and it was now or never if the bass were going to show. I spotted a bar or silver being reeled up the beach and Bob Thompson had done it again a sizeable bass. I thought to myself if there’s one then there might be more…

Once the match was over and we all had completed the hike back to the car park over the gravel beach. There was a rumour that golden balls had done it again and found a 3lb-ish bass. The rumours were true and Richard ‘golden balls’ Ives had taken first place with 4.11 2/3lb. In fact most of the anglers who caught fish to weigh in had bass on the score card. Congratulations to those that caught fish and better luck next time to those who didn’t.

See you all at Kelling.
