Salthouse this week, for a change a Friday evening match, and very welcome change too. Well it was until her at home found out and planned other ideas for what was going to be a lazy Sunday.
It rained non-stop prior to the match and just as I was leaving the house the sun got out. Well bloody typical I thought to myself. By the time I arrived everyone was on the beach almost setup. Caught up in rush hour traffic and satisfying a hungry belly were my best excuses. By the time I got my rod setup and baited up it was time to start.
Positioned between Ray Ward and Bob Thompson I kept flitting back and fourth to find out what the best tactics for this session. Flounders were the main target as the smooth hounds and bass weren’t showing in such large concentrations. Bob Thompson wandered up the beach with a sizeable flounder in tow. After filling in his card we had a lengthy chat about how criminal car insurance companies are and the excessive costs for new motorist. (it was a hectic match as you can tell). After about 15mins of nattering Bob wandered back to his base camp and returned almost within seconds of leaving. A 38cm bass took a liking to his lug bait and neither of us noticed the bite. We both had a laugh and he said he would keep coming over to chat if it caught him fish like that. I thought why not if it works but that was the last I saw bob till the weigh in.
Many small dab were showing especially late in the evening. The knack was to find the gullies and fish through the small stuff and hope a decent flounder would turn up. Tony Thomas seemed to have this down to a fine art with 5 fish (including a codling)to his name and a winning weight of 3.3 2/3 lb.
The weigh in and results of the match all seemed trivial in the car park, as the up coming match with Sea Angler magazine doing a possible cover of our club was more important.
