A planned Saturday match to allow the club’s hardened anglers to fish the Aldeburgh Blind and hopefully by doing so maintaining a good turnout which for once actually happened. With a relatively late 11:00 a.m. start everyone could make a leisurely journey to Salthouse, well everyone except “captain” Ellis. He was up at the crack of dawn to meet Steve “nearly there” Scholes at 8:00 a.m. a potential new member who wanted to be shown the ropes before starting. Unfortunately his timing went astray and arrived 1½ hours late, welcome aboard Steve. Also arriving nice and early was “smooth” Conway roaring down beach road eager to get back on the shingle after doing a few rounds at other venues and on a mission to ‘fix it’ for “still no buddy” Turk who was after a bit of tuition.
With Henry “the eighth” on Mussel duty it was down to TT to peg the usual stretch west from the end of Great Eye in front of Little Eye mound. Fishing top down with a flat calm sea meant a nice low shingle bank to park on and then just follow the shingle down as the tide receded, could not be more relaxing! With a period of prolonged light winds and light southerly on the day the sea was gin clear, more like mid-summer particularly with whitebait being washed up, would Mr Lokie get his feathers out yet again! Such conditions was making everyone pessimistic, nice day but no fish was going through everyone’s mind. Anyway things started to perk up as the regulars began to arrive and the boys with their toys, that is the trolley brigade. A slightly reduced grid on the day but all seemed to take a liking to using them on the shingle so where will this end. As the beach car park filled up there were a few moans about the lack of “Mr Coffee man” who duly arrived rather late for some but for those that were ambling a refreshing relieve, thanks Mr Lokie!
So after all the banter it was down to fishing and you’d have thought they hadn’t fished for months as all were ready with rods in hand baying for the whistle to be blown. It was pretty obvious from the start it was going to be the usual Salthouse chuck of 50-80 yards with booms the favourite rig. As seems to be the norm these days “yoda” Thomas was into a nice 23cm dab first cast so was all that apprehension about lack of fish wrong as this was followed by another small flattie. Not to be out done end peg 12 “better booms” Beeton soon had a double shot of dabs on his card including a healthy 25cm specimen. Fishing next to him was his old adversary “the consultant” Allison (Peg 11) who started off slow but soon had a couple of small flatties on his card although he had to contend with the local auto speaker for some considerable time.
Further down the stretch “sandy coke” Loke (peg 9) got off to a quiet start but eventually found a small dab followed by a 25cm version to keep his pen wet. The lower order pegs were not fairing too well but “smooth” Conway (peg 2) managed a couple of small flatties and his tuition had paid off with “still no buddy” Turk (peg 1) finding a 22cm dab. With the tide ebbing fast others began to find a fish or two with new man “nearly there” Scholes (peg 4), “captain” Ellis (peg 5), “mobility” Morse (peg 7) and “no hat” Attew finding a small flattie. Not so small flattie for “squids” Camilleri (peg 3) as he found a cracking 27cm dab. After a successful day at Bacton it was a down day for “silver fox” Neave (peg 6) as he could not find a single fish all match but he’ll be back like at Bacton.
Back at the high end “better booms” Beeton soon had 4 dabs on his card but then he hefted and lost his favourite boom rig, you could see the tears! That completely threw him and it was the best part of 2 hours before he had another fish. Taking advantage of Bill’s predicament “the consultant” Allison and “yoda” Thomas started to find some small and the odd decent dab to start to match “better booms” score. At this stage the tide was edging closer to bottom and the fish seemed to switch off. This was not helped the vermin activity which was stripping hooks in minutes. Back at the low end, fish were still coming in as “still no buddy” Turk started to find a few dabs which got instructor “smooth” worried and in the end he required a 21cm dab to keep his nose in front. With only the odd fish coming in it was “sandy coke” Loke who was making a late charge with a small dab and 25cm flounder which was the only flounder and other species asides dabs that was caught.
In the final ½ hour of the match the unluckiest person of the match was “yoda” who with “consult” in attendance saw his rod bend double and then again with a typical big flounder bite. The retrieve was heavy and then got hefted but was freed only to end up on the beach with a lump of weed, a load of line and one broken hook. That’s one big lesson learnt about replacing old hooks regularly. However, the luckiest person of the match was “sandy coke” who after the whistle had been blown landed a plump 26cm dab to bring his score up from obscurity on his match card.
In the end it was this final dab that gave Peter “sandy coke” Loke a share of the honours with Bill “better booms” Beeton who both had 1lb 5oz from 5 fish for Peter and 6 fish for Bill. Final podium slot went to Tony “yoda” Thomas with 1lb 1/3oz from 5 fish. Heaviest flat club points went to Ray “squids” Camilleri for his 27cm (7oz) dab. The Super Pools winners were the same as the club match.
In the end the clear water apprehension was certainly justified with only 40 fish caught weighing just 7lb 13oz with a very good turnout. In theory, should start to improve soon as the water colours and the cold weather comes in to push the vermin out and bring the fish in. The forecast is that this should start to happen for our next match which is the club’s ANNUAL OPEN & ROY WALLER MEMORIAL at KELLING on SUNDAY 28TH OCTOBER fishing 9:00-2:00. Please support the club at this match and please bring a raffle prize.
