With the Iron Road out for action for club motors the 7th Leg of the Summer Accumulator was switched to Salthouse main beach. A cloudless sky with a light south westerly greeted a healthy club turn out as they met at Salthouse beach car park for an early start. Pre-match banter threw up some interesting comments particularly from JC who remarked that it was too bright and too calm for any bass to be there, little did he know what was to come. This was not good news for a rejuvenated “class act” Thorburn whose stated that his sole objective on the day was bass, bass and more bass. Likewise “captain” Ellis was there just for the big fish but this was match conditions so would they come unstuck with their tactics?
Pegging was along our usual stretch, westward in front of “Little Eye” mound and young Henry soon had it pegged, well done Henry! Fishing over the top meant no chasing the tide and soon everyone had settled in on top of the high water shingle bank, hoping they had chosen their position wisely. It certainly looked like a bass sea and the predicted 1 to 2 foot swell was certainly way above this which added to the bass lobby. At the whistle it was evident from bait and tactics that the target was bass but would their optimism be proven. It was soon apparent that weed and strong tide would be a problem as lines started being dragged eastward but at least it was the same for everyone.
With rods remaining motionless the early chance of picking up points was rapidly diminishing. This was the case for “steady” Carter (peg 9) who decided to leave his first cast out a little while longer as next peg “yoda” Thomas (peg8) hauled in an empty rig. That was an important move as shortly afterwards his rod bent double and slackened off after which he was seen moving eastward fighting something in the surf. The next minute he was trying to grab a monster bass and bring it up the shingle bank to his buddy. His tactics had worked and there was a beautiful 66cm bass on his scorecard worth 275 points or around 5lb 12oz in weight. The biggest club fish by far in this season’s campaign and it’s going to take some beating. This completes a double for JC at Salthouse as he had a slightly smaller bass at the first match of the season and they both took rag tipped crab.
Well, was this game set and match on the first cast or were there more of the beauties out there? This was now going through everyone’s minds. The focus now really turned to bass as one needed at least two good sizeable specimens to match this cracker. Out came Henry’s pennel stacked with crab placed into the distant gully but he wasn’t giving up on the flounders as a slider went into the breakers gully, well almost! Things then stayed quiet for some time with tide flow picking up and the weed becoming more of a nuisance as leader knots had to be cleared to complete a retrieve. There were signs of some flatties with “silver fox” Neave (peg 1) recording a 27cm flounder and a 25cm version to “consultant” Allison (peg 14). Whilst small dabs came to “better booms” Beeton (peg 12) and “sandy coke” Loke with everyone else struggling. It was a most frustrating day for “inspector” Morse (peg 11) who was finding the fish but all undersize dabs and this lasted the whole match.
The top of the tide came and went with the swell continuing to increase and pound the bank but thankfully everyone’s judgement was correct and no one got swamped. With time slowly dwindling away it was becoming a bad day for the majority as their cards remained empty. However, as the tide started to ebb and ease and the weed stopped flowing things started to improve particularly for “captain” Ellis (peg 13) as he found a small dab. “red stuff” Randell (peg 7) had resorted back to his flounder tactics and finally he managed to find a small dab and then a 25cm flounder close in, much to his delight. Likewise “no name yet” Ellis (peg 3) also managed to find a 20cm dab and then a slightly better 23cm specimen. There was also at last some real action on peg 4 where “smooth” Conway was into a undersize schoolie and a satisfying 30cm dab to ensure his card was marked. Also into a schoolie bass was “no hat” Attew but a 35½cm version, not your day today Sam! Back on peg 8 “yoda” Thomas was getting more disconsolate and with an hour to go no fish so out came the slider resulting immediately in a healthy 26cm flounder followed shortly afterwards by an 18cm version.
At the far end of the stretch “class act” Thorburn (peg 16) was having a dire day after setting his stall out for bass with big crab baits he just could not connect with one. Whereas, next peg 15 “sandy coke” Loke was doing his usual lob with a mixture of lug, wrigglers and crab and was at least finding the flatties, although small in size he did manage 4 of them. “inspector” Morse’s (peg 11) day did not improve as didn’t “no hat” Attew (peg 5) and along with “no buddy ” Turk (peg 2), “dickleburgh man” Camilleri (peg 6) and of course “class act” Thorburn (peg 16) failed to mark their cards. Apart from that first 15 minutes, “steady” Carter could not find another fish to add to his bass but I don’t think he was too concerned although he did keep saying he wanted to catch a flounder.
In the end it was the bass and only bass of the day that gave John “steady” Carter victory with his 66cm or 5lb 11 2/3oz bass although it weighed 5lb 13oz at the end of the match. Next and someway behind was Henry “redstuff” Randell with 1lb 3 1/3oz from 3 fish followed by Dene “smooth” Conway with 15 1/3oz from 2 fish. Heaviest club flat points went to Henry Randell for his 31cm (12oz) flounder and heaviest round points of course went to John Carter for his 66cm (5lb 11 2/3oz) bass. The super pools was taken by John Carter with Henry Randell 2nd and Dene Conway 3rd.
Just one sizeable bass caught but that is going to take some beating in the club’s specimen competition. Altogether only 20 fish were caught weighing in total 10lb 15oz. A match dominated by one fish although it could have been so different but that’s sea fishing for you. The tide was selected for the “iron road” to fish over the top and in hindsight we should have started later to get more of the ebb on the open beach, we will know in future!
