A bright slightly chilly afternoon with a light south westerly greeted a small hardy group of club member as they met at the Weybourne beach car park. With the ticket machine naffed it was easy parking instead in the “puddle” on the road. Attendance had been reduced due to the carvery connection, the deep south match call and the need for some beauty sleep before a hard day’s graft. With Richard on NSL Final pegging duty he offered to give TT a rest and do the duty for this session. After a bit of striding practice in the car park he was soon on his way with his “project manager” Ivan, pegging west of the car park from the hot spot gate, thanks Richard! All were soon on their way to catch the last embers of daylight for set up. All except TT who was loitering in the car park which was just as well as who should appear late in the check in period was “no buddy “ Turk who proudly boasted that he is now “new buddy” Turk. He was soon carded up and off to his peg but making an even later arrival was rookie “almost there” Scholes making an appearance only minutes from the start.
With a flat sea and a flooding tide all had to set up above the high tide mark shingle having to negotiate a rather steep shingle incline to reach the water’s edge. With the prospect of some good whiting into darkness all were soon chomping at the bit to get going. Unfortunately, due to TT’s watch doing a “back to the future” from Morston grit it was eventually the backup system that got us going, many apologies. With fading light all had opted for the gentle Weybourne lob instead of blasting it to the wind farm.
At this stage I must apologies for the lateness of this report primarily due to NSL preparation. The fishing side of the report will therefore be rather short this time, again many apologies. With his trace barely wet rookie “chig” Mushroom (peg 6) was soon into a small dab and could be seen cantering up the shingle. This continued for a while as he carded small dab after small dab and at the end he complained that his woolly hat was soaked with sweat. Also into small dabs was “yoda” Thomas (peg 2) with a few in the mid 20 cms which helped to build his card. “Consultant” Allison (peg 1) and “red stuff” Randell (peg 4) had a slow start but they were soon finding the dabs and this continued for the first half of the match.
“captain” Ellis (peg 7) was also finding the fish and steadily adding small dabs to his card but “silver fox” Neave (peg 5) was struggling to find the fish. After finding just a few dabs he had to be content with points saving rockling. Late starter “almost there” Scoles (peg 9) was finding some reasonable dabs but was more focused on helping his mate, a non-match angler who was finding it hard to catch even a single fish. However, by the end he had caught one and he was hooked, staying on the beach until well up to midnight and completely throwing out “almost there’s” evening work plans. In contrast to his long time fishing partner “no hat” Attew (peg 8) was piling up the dabs and was soon on to his second card.
Further down the field “new buddy” on peg 3 was finding it difficult even to find a single fish but eventually he was off the mark. He struggled right through to the end and before he left early he admitted he was missing his mentor, DC, identifying this as the lack of fish on his card. As the tide flooded we all expected at least the whiting to come on but they were very elusive. The scurrying up and down the shingle of small lights started to diminish as the small dabs started to switch off. Some whiting did appear but only a portray 7 appeared on the cards although the majority were quality specimens of over 30cm.
In the end it was the dabs that provided the weight as the whiting failed to show in numbers. With a steady flow of dabs all night, Tony “yoda” Thomas took the honours with 5lb 7 1/3oz from 28 fish followed by Sam “no hat” 4lb 8 2/3oz from 25 fish. Missing out by just 2/3oz, Ivan “consultant” Allison took the final podium slot with 4lb 8oz from 22 fish. The club heaviest flat points went to Sam for his 29cm dab and heaviest round points to Tony for his 33cm whiting.
The one and only night club match should have produced bucketful of whiting but they just did not arrive. It seems that this year the whiting are going to be very elusive. Let’s hope that a drop in temperature brings them in shore.
The next club match is for the Woodward Cup at KELLING on SATURDAY 24th NOVEMBER fishing 10:00-3:00.
