Strong warm southerlies greeted club members at Cley beach car but the forecast of heavy showers never materialised leaving a few who were over-prepared rather sweltering during the match. With a 16lb smoothie being caught on same beach 2 days earlier and reports of smoothies at Trimingham all we could hear was young “Henry” saying that someone would get a smoothie or two. Just for a change pegging was to the east in front of the wreck to try and take advantage of any specimen bass. All were soon on their way to their pegs except “class act” who was patiently waiting and practicing his new rod at Kelling, he had not read his newsletter!
Fishing top down with a slight lump and colour in the sea, everyone was as usual full of expectation of some good fish, particularly at the beginning and at end of the session. At the off some opted for crab to target the smoothies and larger bass others straight lug for smaller sizeable bass and flatties. Within minutes “yoda” Thomas was attempting to attach a slider when his rod started bouncing and his line moving fast down tide. This resulted in a plump healthy 3lb bass on the beach within ten minutes of the beginning of the match. What a start and everyone thought we are in for a cracking day, how wrong we were.
As the tide started to ebb everyone was very quiet apart from the odd schoolie and “inspector” Morse who managed to record a small dab along with “silverfox” Neave with a small flounder. Slack water as expected did not improve things which was typified by the usual wandering about and friendly banter. With the resumption of the tide things started to slowly improve with “sandy coke” Loke with a small flounder and then a 42cm bass. The “inspector” along with “silver fox” then added to their scores and “eel man” Carter found 2 reasonable flounders but the rest were finding it hard. “Yoda” noted where “sandy coke” was casting and placed lug tipped wrigglers at same range and within minutes had another albeit smaller 38cm bass on his card.
In the end Tony “yoda” Thomas took the honours with 4lb 2oz from just 2 fish and effectively with that lone 3lb bass the match was over in the first 10 minutes. Next was Peter “sandy coke” Loke with 1lb 15oz also from 2 fish followed by Peter “inspector” Morse with 1lb 4oz from 3 fish. Heaviest flat on the day went to John “eel man” Carter with 8oz flounder and heaviest round to Tony “yoda” Thomas with the 3lb bass.
Apart from the weather, not a particularly fruitful match with very few fish and a mood of despondency especially “class act” who was last seen disappearing in a cloud of dust down beach road, probably gone to find his mojo at Kelling. Glad to see Dick back on the beach doing the sport he loves although he too had lost his mojo on the day but he says he’ll get it back in the river. Also like to welcome Ashley Riches to the club from the Kings Lynn club scene who intends to get his mojo working at the next match.
Club members were particularly disappointed on the day during their usual rubbish gathering exercise to find quantities of debris left by other anglers using the wreck stretch over the past few days. Rubbish consisting of paper, plastic and more worrying line and hooks. It appears that these anglers which may be just a small minority do not care about other beach users, animals or the environment to leave rubbish of this nature on the beach. It only takes a minute to stuff this lot in a carrier bag and take it home for disposal, how can they be persuaded? From this evidence Cley Parish Council were more than justified to raise the issue and blame anglers for the rubbish on this particular beach last year so let’s hope the culprits do change their ways for the good of us all in our sport.
Next match is at Kelling on Sunday 15th May 2011 fishing 2:00 – 7:00 which is a day later than originally announced although “class act” is already there practicing with his new rod. The May newsletter will shortly be on the website and contains the remaining fixtures for the summer.
