Kelling Sunday 11th March 2012 – 9th Leg Winter Accumulator & Teams of 5
At last the “weather gods” were giving us something to enjoy, a clear but slightly misty sky and a light North Westerly with no chance of rain. All of this courtesy of a high pressure centre slap bang over the centre of the UK and we all know that historically this seems to put the fish off feeding. After the previous weekends good catch we all knew this couldn’t happen today or could it? The weather had enthused a significant number of team members as there they were queuing up well before 8:00a.m. waiting for the gate to be opened. So with Muckleburgh Collection open for the weekend we could all head straight to our parking slot on top of the small cliff with an excellent view of a calm sea with a 2-3 foot swell at the top of the tide.
Pegging was 2 sections from just west of Kelling block house up to a good distance from the radar and under the small cliff towards the wreck. The mid-week rough up had certainly left its mark with a very steep shingle bank requiring mountaineering skills to negotiate and a lot of dried up dabs. Everyone was soon on their pegs and raring to go with no real complaints about the steep access, well at least they would not have to climb it each cast. In theory we had an excellent tide fishing all the ebb to the bottom. With the ebb tide in full swiing we would get a short period of activity before slack water and then a good tide for the rest of the match. At the whistle the majority opted for the usual Kelling chuck rather than doing some horizon business.
As we always say, first couple of chucks will give us an indication of how the match would perform and so right this was for this particular match. For the best part of the first half hour rods remained motionless especially on the low order pegs in sections A and B. If the Dabs are there then they’re on the feed straight away and your rod starts to rattle but today nothing. After the previous week’s vermin activity a few were opting for short times between casts but after a few retrieves with bait being retrieved intact it was obvious that even the crab had gone to ground or whatever. With the situation looking like being dire it was trying everything time, like in the gutter, at distance , rolling lead and lots of patience.
At this stage with slack rapidly approaching it really looked bad but in the low order pegs “red stuff” Randell (“young henry”) managed to scrounge out a nice 25cm to break the duck at this end which was followed by a smaller version to “yoda” Thomas. At the other end under the small cliff the odd Dab was being found with “salesman” Boyce, “last cast” Watts and “dickleburgh man” Camilleri getting on the scorecard. Further down towards the wreck it was as bad with “smooth” Conway and “silver fox” Neave both finding a fish and as with the other end there were still a lot blanking. However, it was soon heard that “silver fox” was bucking the trend as he started to record Dab after Dab to take an early lead. He had either found a hole or his standard techniques were just paying off this time.
As slack water arrived the fish, what there were just stopped feeding. Section B was particularly dire with stars “better booms” Beeton and “scoop” Fenech on adjacent pegs being in frustration mode as everything they tried just didn’t result in a single fish. After a good blow-up in mid-week it was expected that the place would be full of fish feeding on the remnants of this activity but not the case. One could speculate that the high pressure could be the culprit but the clue probably was in the small Dab caught by “yoda” which had strands of razor fish coming out of its mouth and its belly like a small golf ball. The theory is that the rough-up had been such to dislodge and smash up tons of razors as even the weed was dripping in the stuff and the fish had literally gorged themselves on it. This could also be said for the crab that were there in abundance the previous week and had totally disappeared a week later.
Slack water produced nothing but as the tide finally turned a few rods started to nod. Section A still only had a couple of fish but at last Section B in the form of “better booms” Beeton found a fish followed by “sparks” Hudson, “inspector” Morse and finally “scoop” all managed to find a fish. “sparks” performance improved further as he started to find fish as did “better booms” with a framing fish on his last cast. “yoda” managed to find a couple more Dabs at range to tie with “young henry’s” single fish on points. “chippy” Doy’s small Dab on his very last cast saved his face but no such luck for “no name yet” Ellis stuck out on hot peg 1 who could not find a single specimen which was the same for “no buddy” Turk on peg 10.
The middle of the stretch fish at last started to appear in increasing numbers to save a few embarrassments. In Section C “steady” Carter, “penn points” Roberts and “the consultant” Allison eventually found one or more fish but “new gear” Vertigan struggled to find even a single fish. After real success in previous matches this was a steep learning curve but stick at it Ash. The real battle in this section was between “salesman” Boyce and “last cast” Watts who were finding some real competitive fish but to the disappointment of “salesman” it was “last cast” who found a section winning fish at the end.
In Section D straddling the small cliff and open beach, fish also started to appear with “big fish” Elliott and “no hat” Attew all recording Dabs with “no hat” finding the only sizeable round fish of the match, a 27cm whiting. “ex-orange van man” Simmons and Dab expert really did struggle after a long lay-off but eventually did find a 19cm Dab that saved his grace, welcome back Peter. However, the star in this section was “class act” Thorburn who eventually got his flounder hat on and found 3 towards the end including his traditional 29cm specimen in the dying minutes to secure the section.
Relatively speaking, Section E was where all the action was as “ranger” Shorthouse, “captain” Ellis and “small hooks” Stannard at last started to catch Dabs. As time progressed “ranger” and “smooth” Conway were once again locked in a duel for supremacy in the section but in contrast to previous engagements “smooth” managed to do the business by 2/3oz. However, the star in this section was “silver fox” Neave who continued his run at the start to add to his score and easily took the section.
In the end it was his consistency throughout the match that gave John “silver fox” Neave the top honours with 1lb 9 2/3oz from 9 fish. Very very closely followed by Paul “class act” Thorburn with 1lb 9oz from 5 which included that big flounder. Final podium slot was shared by Dene “smooth” Conway and Mike “last cast” Watts both with 14 2/3oz from 5 fish. The heaviest flat for club points went to Paul Thorburn with his 29cm flounder and heaviest round to Sam Attew with his 27cm whiting.
On the teams front, HSAC Morston Creek at last got its act together to take the match with 6 penalty points closely followed by the current team of the series, HSAC Rite Gear on 8 points. Avenue Angling scrapped third spot with 11 points closely followed by HSAC Crack Offs 12 points followed by HSAC Blakeney Bar with 15 points. The top 3 teams after 5 rounds are HSAC Rite Gear (38), HSAC Morston Creek (44) and Avenue Angling (46).
A very hard match and an extreme contrast to the match the previous Sunday. A total of 63 sizeable fish were recorded weighing just 12 1/2lb from 53 Dabs, 9 Flounders and 1 Whiting. For once the wreck end out fished the pillar box but I am sure the mid-week rough had something to do with this. This was the last club match of the 2011-2012 season with the club AGM and Presentation meal at Kelling Heath Holiday Park next Sunday 18th March 2012. The AGM will determine the next club match which may be the rescheduled cancelled Teams of 5 match at Bacton via Castaways Holiday Park on Sunday 25th March 2012 fishing 12:00-5:00 followed by small buffet and prize presentation.
