After a week’s break for the Help for Heroes match it was back to club activity again. With the May weed in full bloom on the coast along with associated stench it was time for the club’s annual summer excursion to the Ouse estuary at Kings Lynn. Fishing our now preferred venue on the west bank courtesy of the Environment Agency all gathered in the lea of the bank and trees nicely sheltered from the blustery South West wind all except “sandy coke”. He had a slight computer glitch and his satnav took him to the East bank where he was waiting patiently for life to appear. Fortunately, “motorway maintenance” or should we say “match box” for the day soon fixed his problem and he was soon with us complete with fire and brimstone.
The river was in fine fettle giving us a nice steady ebb and ideal conditions for finding where the estuary species were feeding. Pegging was just south of the northern culvert well away from the Treatment Works stench and with everyone only yards of their motors , the scene was set for an enjoyable and extended six hour session. From the off all sorts of tactics were being adopted from straight 3 hook flappers to all 3 hooks below the weight with long snood. It was going to be the usual contest between crab versus worm as the Ouse tends to have very low vermin (crab) activity for most of the tide.
As seems to be the norm these days “yoda” on the high number end peg was first to score when just a slight tap tap on his rod resulted in a nice 32cm on the bank and yes it had taken a lug/rag combination; one up to worm! Next peg “class act” was having none of this and hauled in a double shot of 29cm and 31cm flounders and yes, both on crab! This was followed by a steady stream of quality flounders all taking crab! At this point “yoda” was left pondering how he was going to compete against this onslaught. At the other end of the stretch “silverfox”, “match box”, “sandy coke” and “the hat” were all struggling to catch anything as the tide continued to ebb.
In contrast, middle order pegs were managing to find the odd quality flounder with “inspector” and particularly “gentlemen” finding them in numbers but it was still flounders with the eels keeping their heads down. However, it was back to the high end where the action was happening with “class act” using some of his inventive rigs to continue to haul in quality flounders as slack water arrived. Having had enough of this “yoda” decided to mimic his techniques and immediately his long braid lined rod was going mental and soon had a specimen 36cm flounder on his card along with a 20cm version. The quality fish on crab with the smaller one taking both the other two lug/wriggler hooks, which says it all.
As slack water progressed the fish started to switch off and attention was drawn to other activity which resulted in poor old “inspector” sliding down the muddy bank trying to retrieve a snagged rig. Cursing was also heard coming from the middle of the pack where “discovery man” was getting flounders on the surface only to see them disappear into the murk. Maybe his 2/0s were just a tad too big or maybe his young lady was preventing him being focused on his fishing. “Gentlemen” said he would sort him out at next match and no not his young lady but his match fishing techniques. With the tide beginning to build the elusive eels were expected to show and show they did as a dormant “match box” leapt into action diving down the muddy bank to retrieve a quality 15oz eel. The eels were coming on but not in numbers and the “gentlemen” was showing his skills as the real eel man landing 3 quality eels to add to his list of quality flounders.
Unfortunately, the flooding tide did not bring the promised bag of eels with “class act” and “yoda” adding to their score with some small flounders. With the 6 hours up it was Paul “class act” Thorburn who had at last got his mojo working and done the business with 6lb 13 1/2oz from 14 fish all flounders. Next was that eel man Dick “gentleman” Able with 5lb 8 1/2oz from 12 fish followed by Tony “yoda” Thomas with 4lb 4 1/2oz from 10 fish. Heaviest round on the day was Dene with 15oz eel and heaviest flat was Tony with 36cm flounder.
Next match is at Bacton on Sunday 5th June fishing 10:30 to 3:30 meeting as usual at Castaways Holiday Park. As mentioned in the last report the club match at Kelling on 19th June has been brought forward to Saturday 18th June fishing 10:00 to 3:00.
