The usual regulars gathered at Salthouse beach car park on a somewhat bright and breezy day. With one or two away attempting prizes elsewhere it was decided to try a different stretch; to the left in front of Gramborough hillock. With codling under the cliffs at Weybourne, a rougher stretch which this is could just yield this elusive fish. Unfortunately, the appearance of slabs of concrete and ironwork a short way off in front of Gramborough meant pegging towards Kelling Hard was a safer bet.
A moderate North Westerly gave the water some colour and a reasonable swell produced some good movement in the edge but not the pounding we experienced in December. However, with plenty of bright sunshine and a neap tide hopes of a good catch were not too high on the agenda. Starting later (11:00) to catch more of the flood everyone was soon in the water to try and tempt something early on before slack water. Unfortunately, everyone soon realised that slack water was already there and with neaps there was going to be a 1-2 hour barren period. This was proved to be the case with no fish in the first hour.
With christening duties to attend to “yoda” Thomas appeared an hour late expecting to play catch up but instead found everyone’s card empty. Fortunately, this was soon to change with the first “whiffs” of tide appearing as Peter “Inspector” Morse brought in a reasonable dab to get his session going. Fish started to appear and it was those pesky pin whiting again, where ever we go north south you name it and whatever the tide they’re there. Once they appeared the dilemma was how long to leave between casts to ensure you have bait out there for real fish.
Then the first highlight of the day came with the “inspector” trying to hold bottom not realising he had a reasonable fish on. Bringing it through the breakers it looked like a decent whiting at last but to his dismay it turned out to be what he thought was an undersized codling. Just in the process of returning the fish as undersize he was persuaded to measure it and to his surprise was bang on 35cm. He had landed that elusive codling which with just 2 matches left this season is the only codling to be caught in the club’s 2010-11 match year so far. Well done Peter!!!
With the “inspector” now well over a 1lb and Sam “ the hat” Attew catching albeit small fish everyone else were struggling with no fish including “yoda” whose late start was beginning to show with finding the fish a priority. A quick change of tactics for him to the old trusty booms resulting in a reasonable flounder plus the now predictable pin whiting. With “the hat” still only picking up small fish it became a two horse race between the “inspector” and “yoda” with the latter requiring a quality fish to overhaul the “inspector’s” 35cm codling. Then the second highlight of the day without any real warning “yoda” had a 35cm flounder on the beach adding a useful 52 points to his card and leap frogging the “inspector” to a 20 points advantage.
It was then nip and tuck between “yoda” and the “inspector” with both picking up small fish but no further serious specimens. John “silverfox” and the others were struggling with John more concerned about the tide and decamping to the higher shingle bank an hour from high and the affliction spread with the “inspector” doing the same. This was precious catching time wasted as neap tides don’t move very far and this was the case here.
In the end it was Tony “yoda” Thomas who triumphed even after a late start with 2lb 11 2/3oz from 24 fish closely followed by Peter “inspector” Morse with 2lb 2 2/3oz from 14 fish. Final podium slot went to Sam “the hat” Attew with 13oz from 13 fish who couldn’t find a specimen fish. All the rest had a few small fish or none at all.
The next and penultimate match of the season is the 9th Round of the Winter Accumulator and is next Sunday 6th March at Kelling, 9:00-2:00. This will now not be the Winter Open match as previously advertised although non club members will be allowed to fish as guests.
