With many members on Ireland duty and others trying their luck in the Gorleston – Hopton Open numbers were always going to be low. So as predicted the usual hard core of club members kept the club flag flying and gathered at Salthouse beach car park for a relatively early 9:00 start. Pegging was as usual just west of “little eye” mound to the left of the car park. With very little wind and temperatures rising steeply in this unusual hot “indian summer” all knew it was going to be a struggle.
From the off this was to be confirmed with acres of weed being dragged in from a “gin clear” sea which was certainly going to push the fish out. Fishing a big tide over the top and down should have thrown up a number of fish but all that was there was weed, weed and more weed plus that consistent bright sunshine. All tactics were being used with “no hat” and “silverfox” at their usual comfortable range and “inspector” trying just that little bit further out. It was up to “red stuff” young Henry to be a bit more adventurous by doing his usual bit by exploring the gutter. Unfortunately, it was the weed that put paid to all these tactics and left everybody struggling.
It wasn’t until the tide started to ebb and the weed eased that fish started to appear. Not many but all dabs and enough to make a match of it. At the end, taking the honours was Peter “inspector” Morse with 1lb 0oz from 3 fish. Next with a lucky dab on his last cast was Henry “red stuff” Randell with 13 2/3oz from 3 fish followed by unlucky Sam “no hat” Attew with 10 2/3oz from 2 fish.
Not a brilliant match due to heat , sun and weed but well done to the lads for keeping the club match moment going.
