With no local Opens and Irish duties complete a good turnout was expected which was further boosted by proposed team bonding for the NSL Eastbourne Final. Although the bonding did not happen (not enough super…glue) we would like to welcome aboard 3 potential members, Paul Harvey from Ely way, Stephen Boyce and Trevor Elliott both from around the corner. All were waiting nice and early at the Muckleburgh gate to find the club key no-longer worked, they had changed the key regime, the club key was now redundant. Fortunately, this has now been fixed with a new club key but too late for the day. With a quick change of venue to Weybourne and the offer by Mr Lokie to peg who duly shot off to Weybourne only for him to be on the phone reporting parking slots were flooded. Another change to Salthouse saw him scoot off down there with the others drawing at the gate.
Pegging was in our usual stretch well to the left of “little eye” and in front of “great eye” with plenty of space between the pegs which was going to be necessary, well done Mr Lokie … grand job! Even after 2 venue changes everyone was at their pegs on time even Mr Lokie who had picked end peg 2 and struggled in the last few metres in the shingle but made it. Throughout the changes all had forgotten about the dampness, overcast sky and breezy West South West wind. The tide was well down as we were fishing over the bottom and all were very cautious with pitching their buddies well up the beach. After the previous week’s experience all were concerned about the amount of weed still hanging around as this could dictate tactics.
At the off, all adopted different tactics from semi-gutter bashing, usual comfortable ranges to distance. It was soon apparent that the weed was still there in quantity with “class act” and “inspector” bringing loads of the stuff in. Fortunately, it was that loose red stuff which came off relatively easily. First to strike was “no hat” who had been hardened through years of experience to the nasty weed with double shot of dabs and nice flounder all at his usual comfortable range. Next door to him was “moto maint” with his vast array of baits and multiple rods who soon sussed out where the fish were feeding and soon had some small dabs on his card.
The weed was just about acceptable and not causing too much of a problem but made gutter bashing a non-starter on the day. With “no hat” continuing to pull the fish in with “moto maint” trying to keep in touch everyone was trying to locate where the fish were feeding. Eventually “sandy coke”, “ely man”, “silverfox”, “last cast”, “big fish”, “yoda”, “big man” and “inspector” all found a fish but “class act” was having a torrid time. He was having problems hacking the weed and with end peg he knew he should be doing better, had his mojo yet again deserted him. Not so, as he at last had a dab on his card, not a big one, actually damn small but a fish.
Everyone continued to struggle except for “no hat” who along with “moto maint” continued to bring in fish. Others started to bring in the odd fish with “yoda” finding a just in size slinky whiting. As slack came the fish just switched off for everyone including “no hat”. This was the time to review tactics with “big fish” deciding to adjust his range resulting in a nice 38cm bass on his card. “last cast” decided to follow suit but could only manage an undersize 34cm bass. At this stage with a few cryptic comments to “big man” and “yoda” “big fish” got fed up with this semi-gutter bashing and fish” decided to head for the horizon. This resulted in a nice 28cm whiting followed by a good dab, one of those green ones, nice and long for plenty of points. With “last cast” also doing the horizon bit and finding those green dabs the emphasis of the matched moved to “big fish” and “last cast” who were challenging each other and creeping up on “no hat” and “moto maint”.
Others were starting to get the odd fish and “sandy coke’s” end peg tactics produced some fish but the damage had already been done by “no hat” at the start. In the end it was Sam “no hat” Attew who took the honours with a creditable 3lb 6 2/3oz from 12 fish. He was followed by that man again Mike “last cast” Watts with 2lb 8 2/3oz from 8 fish who to his delight just piped Trevor “big fish” Elliott by 1oz who had 2lb 7 2/3oz from 7 fish.
A very interesting match where finding the fish and distance tactics were the key to success. Numbers of fish is usually an important factor but once quality fish start to appear then the contest is really on. A lot of new faces at this match who hopefully will continue to support the club. If this happens and once the other regulars return we could have damn good turnouts, let’s hope this does happen.
Next match has been switched from Sunday 16th October to Saturday 15th October still at Kelling fishing 11:00 – 4:00. Please note that the clubs mobile phone voice mail message will always contain the date, time and location of the next match. It will also give the status of that match if the weather is bad so please check this out before you leave home in bad weather to avoid an unnecessary journey.
