Holt SAC North Norfolk National Sea League Round 2 (Report)
Sunday 12th November 2017 - Gt. Yarmouth
The Holt SAC North Norfolk National Sea League Round 2 and Club J Long Shield match was fished at Gt. Yarmouth on Sunday 12th November fishing 10:00 to 3:00. A match that was originally scheduled for Gorleston but on advice from locals on state of tide was moved to Gt.Yarmouth. Match stretch for this one was from the Sea Life Centre South to just past the Pleasure Beach. Many thanks to Gary Medler and Richard Jacobs for the pegging and also thanks to Freddie England for his advice on pegging slot..
Meeting point for the match was at the Monument and even with the forecast of the impending weather a good turn out of 7 teams and Individuals soon assembled for the draw. Well there should have been 8 teams but one team had a problem with communication leaving one member stranded at Gorleston and two remaining members deciding to throw in the towel with the impending 11 o’clock deluge and one deciding a carvery a better option.
Forecast for the day was serious North Westerlies and plenty of dampness from 11 o’clock onwards. They certainly got this right with the wind producing major seas on the North Norfolk shingle our usual venue for this particular match. Good job we had switched to round the corner as we would have probably ended up here anyway with just a 2-3ft swell instead of 10-12ft. The wetness was persistent throughout and there was some of that white stuff for good measure. Even with such atrocious conditions everyone stuck it out, well nearly everyone with two opting out. Poor little Jack Topping who was catching but the cold and wetness was just a bit too much for him and Mum bused him home. Then there was the other not quite so young one just a couple of doors away from Jack who much to the disgust of his team packed up with 1½ hours left. Better leave him anonymous but some say his ancestors used to make beer barrels.
Enough of this prologue and more about the match. From the off it was apparent it was going to be a hectic one even with the impending weather. Rods were soon rattling and double and treble shots were soon coming ashore to be recorded. The vast majority were Whiting in the mid 20cm range with the odd Dab managing to find the bait before the Whiting. For the first hour it was hectic with everyone rushing about getting their cards filled up the and adrenaline really flowing. Then the wetness came, really biting rain, sleet and hail as each squall past through. Irrespective of the weather the Whiting were still there and they still had to be recorded and the rain played havoc with the match cards. Then along with rain, sleet and wind came the weed, not too much but just enough to make the whole session just a bit more interesting.
Cards were soon rapidly filled up and many had to look for spare cards and scraps of soggy paper to complete their recording on. The rain at least relented for the last ½ hour but it had already done its damage leaving everyone exhausted, cold and wet. Not that anyone really noticed after such an active session throughout. In total 1960 fish (1784 Whiting, 174 Dabs, 1 Bass and 1 Rocking) were recorded weighing 472½lb.
Top team in the end was NORTH NORFOLK LADS with just 6 Penalty Points from 3 zone wins and a zone 3rd. Runner’s up were GORLESTON TACKLE with 10 Penalty Points from a zone win, a 2nd, a 3rd and 4th. Final team podium slot went to HAS BEENS with 12 Penalty Points from two zone 2nd’s and two zone 4th’s. Final podium position went to Bev Self (INDIVIDUAL) Peg 13 with 16lb 4oz from 65 fish who was surprisingly dropped by his team for the match. There was no serious heaviest fish to contest the current league heaviest fish.

In the Club match top Club Member to take the J Long Shield was Overall winner Paul Marshall. Heaviest Club Flat fish went to Phil Read with a 27cm Dab (7oz) and Heaviest Round fish a 37cm Whiting (12oz) taken by Gary Medler. Some of the cards were a bit difficult to read so if any Club Member with bigger fish please let me know.
There were 14 participating in the SAMF Qualifier of which 5 qualified for the 2018 Masters who were Paul Marshall, Kevin Green, Bev Self, Leon Smith and Neil Smart.
A tough match weather-wise but a highly competitive one with both the Teams and Individuals. It was good to see the new teams starting to perform and hopefully they can build on this in the next round to keep the competition interesting. Next Round 3 is on Sunday 12th December at CLEY fishing 10:00-3:00 HW 11:56 4.2m with draw from 8:15 in the Cley Beach Car Park. Back-up venue in case the weather intervenes will be Gt. Yarmouth the same as Round 2 … Tony T
